No Longer doing a Poker Seminar in Berlin
Posted in Poker | View Comments (17)

Hey guys, sorry about the last blog post. Since I've decided to do that poker seminar in Berlin I've had a change of heart-- I found out that the person marketing the seminar is marketing too aggressively. That is, he's basically spamming everyone on 2+2 specifically (my hope is that no one on Leggo got PMs). That isn't my style. I've long believed that if you have a great product, people will gravitate to it (unfortunately, that isn't always the case, but in the poker community where you have educated customers, I like to think that they can do their research and spread by word of mouth). That is the reason that Leggo has stuck around while doing so little marketing and having such a small brain-trust of dedicated people despite having limited resources.

Truthfully, any kind of marketing that involves BIG letters and bold words to try and get the point across really irks me. I believe that most of it is embarrassing-- it is blatantly stating that you believe that the consumer is weak and emotional and affected by such "fluff." I hate when people treat other people like they're stupid (see: Girah scandal where DIH lied to a bunch of people smarter than him and knew he was lying). Going back to the "marketing," I hate when people spam other people. Getting a phone call or spam email tilts the FUCK (in this case, capital letters are just necessary, I'd be screaming it in real life) out of me. It really sucks that these things have any validity in the first place, but certainly they do work on weak people.

So I apologize to anyone who associated the spam PMs or emails that they got about the seminar with me-- I take responsibility because I approved of the person putting together the seminar. It's not my style, I think I'm more low key than people probably think, and it upsets me that even for a second I was associated with such tactics.

In more positive news, I'm back on Stars! I'll see you cats at midstakes for a few weeks, so hide your children or move down if you have to, and as always I appreciate all the HU action I get .

I absolutely feel the same way about these marketing gimmicks. I find a lot of them are intellectually offensive. At the same time I understand that a lot of people just do it because they can and it makes them money, but it's not the kind of business I'd like to be involved in either.

So? Nothing wrong with being truthful

Pretty sure Aaron comes to Amsterdam, otherwise he would make a very big mistake

@Irockhoes: I hear all the time you can party pretty hard in Berlin as long as you have some girls with you. Is that not true? My plan was to go to Berlin to party sometimes.

I agree, most of the Daily Variance product's marketing crack me up. Outlandish statements such as, and I quote, "crush poker in one week", and they are still using a cts screenshot from 3 or 4 years ago to advertise current products which have nothing to do with him, lol. Oh yeah, and "fix your tilt problens in less than an our" for Elements of Poker (as much as I love this book, it is pretty much impossible to fullfill that statement).

Obviously there is good stuff in there, but the marketing is hillarious, especially as he changes them pretty frequently,

i dont completely agree to you actually, what if you have BOTH good content and good marketability? also there are many real world examples where marketabillity prevails over content sadly as well as similar instances of injustice

also, virtually everyone indulges in some form of marketing in one way or another. As an example, as a poker player you market yourself by making blogs, posting hands you played well, etc etc. At what point does it cross the line? Why should there be a line?

on another note, the concept of justice is arbitrary as well in many cases--as an example, is knowledge of marketing something with inherent value such as skill? it seems that you could certainly argue that it is

a final note: i dont agree with that kind of marketing strategy either, just saying there are some unknowns here

Using bold letters, underlined words, and fancy jargon (this player has made over a MILLION dollars) is just unnecessary. Those types of "tricks" clearly demean my ability to make a rational decision. I do not like being thought of as stupid, obviously (nor should anyone).

When I market myself as a poker player, I am simply putting it out there for people to come to. If they want to read my blog regularly, they can. If they want to follow me on twitter, they can. I do not go around linking my blog or Leggo on 2+2-- I link them and talk about them in "my" places.

In this example, this guy fucking sent private messages to people-- would you not feel ridiculous to get a private message that was CLEARLY a long, drawn out, chain letter which is subjective (it's not even like it's from some third party site which says: "If you're interested in poker coaching, here's what's going on.") in your private message box? This isn't an email chain you signed up for, and this isn't posted in a forum where it belongs, it's actually in an inbox where you expect to only see personalized messages. The line is there somewhere, and it's crossed.

Don't you think that great things will find a way to get places? Don't you think that ANY midstakes player in the world who was looking for coaching from me would find it on 2+2 or in my blog or on my twitter? Those are the places they choose to see it-- non-invasively. Great products and ideas spread, people know quality (unfortunately not enough, or Leggo would have more members!). I learned about hundreds of websites through word of mouth (or legitimate target marketing that wasn't spam), I don't need something shoved down my throat.
