April 3rd, The "Gala", Dalai Lama, Ankle Sprain

I bought tickets next month (May 2nd) to hear the Dalai Lama speak.

I am so, so pumped to listen to this man - it is in Gillette Stadium (where the Pats play) and I decided to invite my mom. I have floor seats (so to speak) so I will be very close to the man himself. I've heard he has an aura about him, and well, I'm not spiritual, but I believe in his message(s) through and through.

Yesterday I played pickup and rolled my ankle HARD - I think I need new bball shoes. It got inverted and I heard a "snap" (or "crack"... or "pop"!)

I decided to use a lot of pictures here because my last entry involved no eye candy, lots of text, and as a result, no comments. So I think FLASHY = INTEREST. Maybe!

Anyway, I rolled to the ground, took myself out of action, took off my shoe (which apparently is bad, you want pressure) and massaged my ankle. It hurt to walk. Someone subbed in for me, but than a friend of mine got hurt a few minutes later, and only 2 points to go, so I subbed back in. Big mistake, I couldn't run. I left after that game - I came back and iced my ankle (while watching the Jazz get soul****ed by the the Nuggets, ugh) and basically today my foot swelled, I can't put weight on it, and I've iced it this morning (and will ice it again after this blog) and tried to elevate. This isn't a huge problem because...

I've been ripping through the wire. I finished S1 in 2 days, and am halfway through S2. I actually like S2 so far, but I really want Ziggy to get killed. PLEASE MAKE IT HAPPEN ONE TIME. McNaulty's wife is pretty banging. Omar is the man. etc etc. I love this show.

"You mess with the King"

I also finished S3 of Always Sunny prior to starting the Wire - my take is that there were some GREAT episodes and some horrible ones. ("The Gang gets whacked pt 1&2" were just terribad) Back to basketball.

The day BEFORE I had game 2 of the IM season. I played truly horrendously; I blame the fact I was exhausted (730 game, have been in a VERY early schedule where I woke up at 4:30am) but we played a team of comparable skill/talent level. Alex "the Hammer" was on fire, keeping us in the game (he hit like 4 3s and 2 long 2s to basically give us half our points, we ended up losing 33-40 or so) but everyone else just stunk. I missed all my 3s, blew 2 layups (both contested unfortunately, one off a drive beating my man right and the other on an offensive tip) and had some pretty good passes due to penetration that resulted in TOs. It was somewhat funny, as a team we were actually shooting decently (and crashing the glass ok) but we were all SO turnover prone. That's how they scored their points, too; they ran in transition well, and since they forced so many TOs, they got easy looks.

Actually, about that (resulted in a fight, which is sometimes funny) teams were getting chippy. For whatever reason (BUSH LEAGUE IMO) there was no ref (in IM a reffed game happens like 1 in 5 I guess) and since teams don't count fouls (or have foul shots) it really rewards extra aggressive play. So this kid was hand checking hardcore on me (every single possession, blatantly fouling) and if I call it, it doesn't matter, just resets the possession. (People respond to incentives) so it was infuriating; I was having a weak offensive game, so in the middle of the 2nd half, I slightly lost it, lowered my shoulder and crashed toward the hoop. I sorta barreled him over, but that's where I missed the contested layup - anyway I followed my shot, and tried to rip it from the dude, and that's where teams were like "Calm down man" etc. They escalated the situation, and I'm not doing it justice, but what then followed was the kid I jawed with went at me 3 straight possessions. All 3 I blocked his shot and grabbed the board. So that was a moral victory. (Since at that point people were calling things tight, they were all super clean too)

But, as noted, we lost, it was close at the end (final margin ~7) but they hit a pointless 3 at the end which diluted the scoring margin. I really want Dubby to play for my team, I've been running a lot of point and it tires me out. I want to play closer to the basket or out on the wing to spread the floor, so when I'm running ship it's harder to get personally involved in the offense. Moving along...

The "Gala" was the semi formal I went to on Friday! (So, last week) The Gala (no idea if that's correct spelling, what that exactly means, etc.) is a semi-formal engagement hosted by Tufts Medical School which took place in the middle of Boston. I'm blanking on the name (I think it was the Marriott, can't remember which specific hotel) but my date Sofy, who is a 1st year med student at Tufts Medical, invited me and so voila. Unfortunately Sofy lost her camera while there, so I don't have pictures (which is a shame, as I was in my Armani suit, which I don't get to wear often) and well... What can I say. It was pretty fun, the food was decent, there were a ton of bars and a bunch of doctors.

I just looked it up, yes, it was in fact the Marriott. Here's a description:
Quote:
In 1985, Tufts University School of Medicine held its first Gala. The Gala is a formal social event for all medical students and their guests and is traditionally held at one of Boston's finest hotels.
Dubby is at FW (has been for the past few days for WPT stuff) and I'm thinking about heading down there for the weekend. The ankle is a major concern, and I told him I'd most likely just be in the room watching the Wire, so it's a decision I'll end up making in a few hours. I have 15% of him for the WPT (as usual) and there's an outside shot that I'll actually make an appearance and spur of the moment decide to play. (I think the tourney starts tomorrow, if it starts today, which is possible, then I suppose the decision was made for me!) Later all.

I liked The Wire S1 and 2, but I think the show really, really hits it's stride in season 3. Season 3 and 4 are ridiculously good.
