Not too much to say; for the Super Bowl I could've gone out, but instead Travis drove up from CT and we watched it together. Had zero rooting interest. Barker stayed over for a few days - we played a fair amount of GH. Unfortunately, it's the NBA all-star weekend. Which means I'm in a little bit of NBA withdrawal - I hate all star weekend! So boring. I've been in a shooting slump lately - I posted a video in the NBA Season Thread, and got some good comments. Note that yeah, I missed some gimmes, but I wasn't really trying around the basket. Was focusing more on just jump shots! Such as from Aaron: Quote:
somehow, i don't know how, you bend your knees inward a little bit. i don't do squats very often, but i am guessing that you don't either because it seems like your center of gravity shifts incorrectly when you bend down to get your legs into your shot. legs are, BY FAR, the most important aspect of shooting. it is where you get ALL of your power.
think of it like this. when you bend down, from the side, i see a 90-degree angle forming like half of a diamond. however, what you should see when you are getting deep and bending your legs is a 90-degree angle forming like a box, like you are sitting on an imaginary stool. however, i think when you bend to get into your shot, it would seem more like you are leaning... if you shot a zillion shots and eventually your legs got sore, i'd imagine that your quads would get sore-- but what should get sore is your ass and your hamstrings, because that is what propels you. i hope i am not being too hard on you, i am just spouting off everything that i can think of. it seems to me like if you were able to get lower and have a stronger base, you would be more effective blocking out (i think you are generally a good rebounder and get good position anyways, but obviously getting lower and having more push from your base would help you vs bigger players). additionally, it would seem to make your shooting better because you'd be able to get more range (thus shortening the amount of time you spend loading the ball because you are getting much less power from your arms) and you'd be more explosive starting with your core center of gravity. speaking of your loading, it seems too long... when i was in about the 8th grade, i had a good high school coach tell me that the ball should go from triple threat up to your shot immediately, there should be no loading only momentum use. now, this is pretty much an exaggeration, but his point is correct-- the less that you actually have to "**** the ball back" the quicker your release will be. you basically have to find the right mechanics on your release and then shoot it hundreds of thousands of times, and then your release will be reasonably quick (or settle for a few thousand times and it'll get better fast). i do not have a quick release, my legs are weak and i **** the ball back way too far, so take my advice for whatever it is worth! lol, i don't know what other people have said but feel free to post this on the forums, though i guess it would only be to add to feedback, just giving you permission ahead of time. You're feet are to wide. Land where you leap, Mark Jackson said that once and it's true.
In so many words: fix the leg stuff. Every athletic motion in every sport depends first on a solid foundation, allowing for efficient, repeatable energy transfer from your big muscles. It doesn't matter what you do with your arms; if you don't have a solid, in-balance leg drive, the rest is just guesswork. And if you ever to decide to take up golf (which you should), that's the first thing you'll need to know. Quote:
The lesson, as always: do your damn squats
In any event, last week (exactly a week ago) on Monday the B team made the IM playoffs. We had to win 3 games in a row to win it all - we got a bye in the 1st round, (nice), then won by ~3? in our 2nd game. We were up pretty big and the other team made a huge push. Was a very fun game. Championship game, well, let's just say it needed officiating. Badly. Cliffsnotes are we lost in overtime, but it was pretty lame to lose. Also, I jammed my non-shooting hand in the 1st game and it swelled badly. Ugh. The following day I found out the A team did NOT make the playoffs - for some reason only 4 did. Frustrating. Yet I played pickup and found a way to jam/completely black&blue my shooting hand. I iced it for a while. So, Thursday we had another league game and we were at about half strength. (Missing some people) Played a very good team and I think we lost by 10. We won our first few games and have now lost to the 2 legit teams. I think I played OK, but it's hard to be 100% when you literally can't grip your hand well. Aside from all that... Valentine's day was fun. Today after group coaching I'm going to head home for a day and come back Tuesday. Thursday I have another game, and I leave very early Friday morning for Phoenix. (Then LA) As far as poker is concerned, I've played about 8 hours total this month and I'm up double figures, so I can't really complain. I think that's all!
