help me find a car

Back from CO, and my flight for charlotte tmrw is canceled, so that means I'm going to try to buy a car. Great logic ya? I have no clue how to go about buying a car and really know nothing about cars. We've always had cars available at home, and my parents obv paid for maintenance, gas, insurance, w/e else.

So here's what I got
  • Budget- varied, I havent figured this out yet. I'm kinda leaning towards just a few k to get a beater and leave it on the west coast if I'm traveling around. I don't really want to spend a lot of money and get some ballin car. If there is some crazy value somewhere, however, I wouldn't rule it out
  • New/Used doesn't matter to me, is there a big difference?
  • Visual appeal doesn't matter, just wanna go point A to B without breaking
  • Decent gas mileage, I would think. I shouldn't be doing too many long drives so maybe not a huge deal
  • thinkin a smaller suv, similar to a Honda CRV. I drove a Hyundai Sante Fe back home
  • Purpose is to basically just run errands, drive to golf/restaurant, but I want something that can drive friends around and hold a bunch of snowboards/golfbags/move shit around
  • Realiability is a big factor for me, I dont wanna deal with a lot of maintenance

From there, I don't really know where to go to find cars. Seems like craigslist is kinda the way to go? Carmax and other similar places seem to have a decent markup. Maybe that's just the price to pay knowing the car is legit. Suggestions?

A good SUV for just a few k is hard to find imo.
The best used SUV it's the BMW x5 2005 for 15k, it's a beauty, parking camera, navigation system, automatic pilot, 4x4, SRS, ABS, 19 inch rims, electric mirrors, electric windows, rain sensors, everything.
For just a few k I would buy a used Peugeot 607 from 2002-2005 but it's not a SUV it's a Sedan, but it's big, has a big trunk and a lot of options(comparable to the x5 options) from electric mirrors to refrigerated glove compartment.
Here's pics of the interior and exterior:

Don't think they were hating, just that its impossible to find a peugeot here in the states. I have literally never ever seen one in my life here and I've probably seen well over a million cars in my lifetime.

As for a car to get if you are looking the small SUV/crossover route and don't wanna spend a lot of money and deal with a lot of repairs Id go with a Honda CR-V, a Kia Sportage/Sorento or a Hyundai Tuscon.
