Played a ton of poker today, atleast for me. Got in around 2k hands, almost all HU nl. But I managed to drop 3k in 65 hands in a soft 5/10 HA 6max game on ftp. I dropped it all during the plo. Graphs below.

The hunl went poor. On my own action I lost 2.5k mostly at 5/10, and ran >3k under ev. Losing flips and **** isnt annoying to me anymore, but running into the top of somebodys range over and over bothers me a lot still.

Im also completeing some makeup for a hsmtt stake, by playing some hunl on ftp 3/6-10/20. That went well today, although it ended poorly. Was up ~3kish but dropped a buyin to the infamous MEBSTER at 10/20nl when he flopped bottom set vs my Top pair 2nd kicker in a 3bet pot 100x deep. But still ended up 1k for the makeup stake.

Its now 3am and my body feels like ****. I really need to start getting some daily excercise on days I dont have school.

Anyways heres the graphs. 2nd one is plo

Hadnt played in a few days, so I decided to play a few mtts. Played the stars 109r, nightly, and 50/50, and the FTp 30r, 163, and 50/50, plus a cake 30r. Final tabled 2, and won the 50/50! Not a bad start to 2009. Shout out to matt(probability) and etown, for the sweat down the stretch

quick note: to win mtts just win every all in confrontation, They are easy when u do that, trust me

edit: heres my dec stats. I took the first 2 weeks off bc of school, and then hardly played during the holidays. Its like 95% HU

Hope everyone had a good Christmas, Hanukkah or w/e. Mine was pretty uneventful, but I got a bunch of cool dvds and ****. Got a bunch of seasons of Curb, Its always sunny in Philly, The Wire, and Sopranos. Also got Eastern Promises which is a sick Russian mob movie. I had my 22nd bday right near Christmas, so I get a lot of stuff all at once which is cool. Family is all doing good, my sister just moved out to Georgia with her fiancee, who is a captain in the army, and just got back from Iraq.

2008 was a super weird year. 2007 was like my first legit year in poker, and I thought I was really good at poker when 2008 was rolling around. Well obviously I hit a huge ds the first few weeks of the year, wrecked my confidence, and took me a long time to really recover. The thing is tho, despite it costing me a lot of money, that downswing made me work so much harder at poker then I would have otherwise, and Im pretty thankful that it happened now. In 2007 I played mostly mtts, and 2008 was quite a journey, learning how to play in 100bb+ cash games, and how to manage money, my bankroll, and my attitude.

I dont have a lot of goals, for 2009, and hardly any specific ones. I think its important not to set monetary goals in poker because it just ends up ****ing up the way you think. You have to be so detached from short term results in poker, that setting silly monetary goals seems counter productive. But here are some goals for the next year

- Take better care of my body: Ive become super lazy during college, and especially after I got into poker. In hs I was 6'1" 185lbs and played 2 sports, now Im 6'2" and 240 and exercise maybe 2 times a month heh. So I dont have any specific workout plan yet, but my main goal is to slowly lose weight through a combination of better diet, and exercise, hopefully 5+ times a week.

- Finish out school strongly- I got one more year left to graduate, and basically I want to put my best effort forward. Not much else to say.

-Increase my knowledge about investing, and get a small portfolio going. Although, not specifically a goal, Id be very happy if I had a small 5 figure portfolio by the end of 2009. I currently have no investments, and know absolutely nothing about it. Just earlier tonight I started in reading The Intelligent Investor, and have a few other books that I was recommended on investing and trading.

For poker, I have a few goals, such as continue to get better at things that I improved upon in 2008 such as

-handling variance, both good and bad

-making better decisions with my bankroll and game selection

The last goal, is to work on integrating programs like stox ev and stox combo into my sessions where Im working on my game. These programs are pretty amazing, and likely the future of poker analysis. At this point, the programs are still somewhat confusing to me, but I hope to put in some hours with them, and start breaking down poker even further mathematically then I have in the past. Most of my work will likely be on solving for exploitive lines, but perhaps I will get good enough to do some work on optimal solutions.

Good luck to everybody in 2009

Brief Update

Havent updated since I finished my finals. On Saturday I had my 22nd Birthday. Didnt do too much for it really. I dont get worked up over birthdays anymore really. Seems like its all down hill after 21. Been playing just a little bit of poker, and was able to transfer a few k on cake, and run that up to 5 figures in a couple thousand hands which was nice.

Bulk of my play for the next few months will likely be HU. Atm it will be a lot of 3/6 with some 5/10 mixed in and prob some 2/4 as well. For about half of 2008 I had a mtt stake for the $200+ buyins on sundays. For the first half of it both me and the stake made nearly 5 figures off of it, but then I hit a downswing and now have 13k in makeup. We decided to have me make it up playing 3/6 -10/20 HUnl on ftp, basically just bumhunting. So until I make 13k I wont be playing anyone decent on FTP lol. Any play on other sites is my own action or if I p-lay 2/4 on ftp. Ive never bumhunted in my life and I thought it might be hard to figure out who to play and stuff, but its actually ridiculously easy.

Utility theory and Bankroll

Ive been thinking about optimal bankroll strategies and game selection lately for HU games. I think a good strategy for the online player would be to play a range of stakes in games that he has anywhere form 15-20- to 50-75 buyins for, and basically bumhunt or game select at the highest levels hardcore, and play pretty much anyone at his lowest limit.

I was having a discussion with a friend the other day about the merits of game selecting in HU vs playing anyone. For most of my career Ive usually just played anyone atleast for a while, possibly quitting them if I lose a couple buyins and I am sure they are atleast as good as me. But I was doing more reading and thinking about the Kelly criterion and optimal bankroll strategies, which are talked about in MOP. That seems to advocate playing with a lot more game selection at higher stakes, and being aggressive in moving up and down levels. I mentioned this to my friend, and he brought up the argument that if you play anyone, you will improve a lot faster than if you game select or bumhunt higher stakes which I thought was a fair point

But that got me thinking about, how do we quantify how much playing anyone improves our game compared to game selecting? And how does that relate to our longterm bankroll growth? I have absolutely no idea on how to quantify something like that, and Im not sure anyone else does either. But, I was thinking maybe it would be theoretically possible to estimate using Utility theory? If anyone has any thoughts on that feel free to post a comment or PM me.

I think it could be a pretty interesting discussion because while some people strive to be the best poker player in the world others play poker strictly to make the most money possible right away, and there are probably infinite preferences in between. I feel like it should be possible for someone a lot smarter than me to create a utility function representing this spectrum of goals.

Ill be giving this more thought, and maybe make a follow up post if I can remember at some point. Hopefully this wasnt boring for too many people. I find it kind of interesting

Im taking a short break from writing a final paper. Its for a US history class that focuses on 1900-1928. Actually kind of a cool class. Anyways it was 9 essays questions to choose from, and I have to answer 2 each 4-5 pages. Heres the questions I am choosing.

1.DURING AND AFTER WORLD WAR ONE, AMERICANS LOST THE CRUSADING SPIRIT OF PROGRESSIVISM AND TURNED INSTEAD TO THE BUSINESS OF MAKING MONEY AND LIVING THE GOOD LIFE. WHY? DISCUSS.

2. THE TWENTIES WAS OFTEN CALLED THE ERA OF PROSPERITY. BUT THERE WERE PERILS INVOLVED IN PROSPERITY. WHAT WERE THEY AND WHY IF IT WAS THE ERA OF PROSPERITY DID IT END WITH A MONUMENTAL ECONOMIC COLLAPSE? EXPLAIN THE ECONOMIC FORCES AT WORK IN THE TWENTIES THAT HELPED TO CREATE THE GREAT DEPRESSION.

Anyways, I sometimes watch TV while I write, and Ive been watching the UCLA, USC game(god we suck this year) but have been switching back and forth between that and the movie What About Bob on comedy central. I havent seen it in a long while, but it is one of my favorite comedies from the 90s. If you like Bill Murray and havent seen it you should rent it or something.

Just a quick update, I needed to do something to take a break from this essay writing. peace

Ive never been able to maintain a blog for more than a couple weeks. Had a couple private ones that crashed and burned, had one at cardrunners like a year ago I updated for a while, and then this one at leggo that I have like 4 posts in like 5 months or something ridiculous.

I guess this is obvious, but I suck at blogging, so even if I am able to post regularly, my posts will probably suck for a while as I get used to it. ARE YOU EXCITED TO READ THIS BLOG YET?!

Im psyched.

Well right now its 420pm in Los Angeles California and Ive been up for 27 hours. Had to pull an all nighter to write a 8-10 page paper for a European History class. I obviously did 0 work on it until about 18 hours before hand even tho I had it assigned a month ago. Standard obviously. I ended up having to pull out an old trick form high school, a trick which Im sure many of you are familiar with. Actually it was more like a 2 pronged strategy. The first thing was changing the font from Times New Roman to Courier New. Being the nerd that I am I calculated the page edge I achieved by switching and it came out to about 1.3-1. That is, a paper written in Courier New is 1.3 times as long as Times. That combined with widening the paper margins by 1/10th of an inch and my strategy was completed. However reality set in when I placed my paper down on a pile of papers in my class this morning and witnessed the stark contrast of the two fonts. Oh well my professor is over 50 so maybe he will not notice.

I haven't played poker since last Tuesday, as in 9 days ago. It really sucks because Ive been on a very nice upswing the last 2 months. I had to take care of school work however, and tried to enjoy my thanksgiving break at home without playing, so whatever. I feel like my NLHE game is fairly strong, and very strong for the limits I play, but I have overall I think I've underachieved the last year or so. At this point I put it down as growing pains, and Im probably a lot better off for it. Some of it was running bad, but for a while I had developed very bad habits that spawned out of the period of time that I was actually running bad. Anyways, Ive had a very good last couple of months monetarily, and this combined with a new poker set up means that I'm ready to make a lot of money for a while. Starting about Oct 1 I have made a concerted effort to learn PLO, both 6max and HU. Ive been getting coaching from someone who I deem as a very good coach and overall very knowledgeable about general poker theory, and very good at poker himself. Ive been enjoying playing about half PLO and half NLHE and winning a lot of buy ins at both.

I just got a new camera, so maybe when I get it set up Ill take a picture of my set up. I actually built the tower myself(something Ive never done before) and spent about 4500 on the overall set up of Tower, 2 30s, Speakers, Mouse, etc.

As for real life stuff, I prob wont post about it much, but I will say that a couple days ago, I saw and felt a lump beneath my left Ear lobe and above my Jaw line. Its still very small, and probably nothing. However I am a slight(or maybe more than slight) hypochondriac and have been searching all over the internet for what it could be. I wont be able to see a doctor for a week or two unfortunately. Its probably just a swollen gland due to allergies, or maybe an impending infection or some other slight illness. However it is a painless lump which is one of the characteristics of Lymphoma. The painful ones are usually infections. Again, I'm probably way overreacting, but this kind of stuff bothers me greatly.

Good Job to anybody who made it from start to finish. This was a long blog

If anyone reads this go ahead and comment on the hand. The player had already shown down min 3betting me with 99 otb, then pot controlled a Q88 fllop and call 2 bets when I had KQ.

This is on cake and even tho Id never advocate 4bet folding QQ like ever, this is one of the rare spots where id figure this random cake donk would only 5bet KK+ and would call with 100% of his remaining range.

I dont think i like my flop bet size. I was thinking of how I should bet to get it in on 3 streets, but I think its better to get it in on 2 streets given most of his range is vulnerable to overcards, and I dont think he is gonna spaz out and raise/call 88 on the flop

That said once he minraises I felt super weird about shoving cos its hard to think he would do that with TT or 99 or like 98. At the same time I didnt think he would 3bet 44 or 22 and he also INSTA called my 4bet so I rly thought KK and AA would be impossible given the timing tell. Idk wat u guys think

So like a lot of things I kinda forgot/got lazy with this blog. I wanna start it back up again, and hopefully keep it goin semi regularly.

On the real life front, school just started up for me on Thursday. Im in my 4th and probably last year at UCLA. I have a pretty heavy class schedule for this quarter and also the rest of the year and Ill still probably have to take a session of summer school to get enough units to graduate.

As for poker, my last couple months has been super swongy. Ive been playing a bit of everything, HUNL, 6max NL, 6max PLo and some MTTs, and none have gone particularly well. One thing Ive been thinking about is the amount of tables I play. Looking back on the last year or so when Ive gotten pretty serious about poker, I have continually tried and tried to become good at mutitabling, basically trying to play more than 4 tables of 6max or 2 tables of HU. But over and over, I basically have all my worst sessions come from the times I try to 8 table, or 4 table HU, and all my best sessions come form when I 4 table 6max or 2 table HU.

Its actually extremely dumb of me to not have noticed this before, looking back its pretty ****ing evident that I tilt way way more when I play a ton of tables, and I spew waaaaaaaaay more when im playing a lot of tables. I dont necessariy have answers to why this is true, but it seems to be over a pretty big sample. I used to think that I was just running bad when I chose to 8 table and it didnt work out, but Im pretty sure it was me just overwhelmed

Soooo for the rest of 08 IM gonna make a rule for myself to not play more than 4 tables of 6max or 2 tables of HU at the same time. Ill give it the 3 months and see if Im any happier with my results. I feel like if I play less tables, than I can achieve almost the same theoretical Hourly by just playing higher stakes, playing higher quality poker, and also improving at a faster rate. We will see I guess

Im also gonna try to put in more hours actualy playing. I defintely spend way too much time watching videos, reading forums and talking on aim. I think I should be able to play 3-4 hours a day while Im in school no problem, giving me somewhere around 1k hands a day

As of now I got monies on a bunch of diff sites so Im gona do my best to game select pretty hard, and take some shots whenever I see super soft games

since this blog seems super boring with all this writing, Ill post the biggest pot Ive played at PLO so far(playing 1/2 for the most part)

So I figured since I started a blog I should make some goals so I can look back in a few months and be disappointed in how lazy I am. So since I moved from cake back to FTP/stars I've noticed its much easier getting in hands at HU on these sites. On cake a lot of times I would not get action or would only be able to 1 table, especially at 5/10 because every reg on cake at 5/10 is a ****ing bum hunter. Anyways HU is definitely my favorite poker game, and over the last 2 months I have kinda been slowly transitioning to becoming a HU regular as opposed to a 6max reg.

So my goal which Ill be trying to update/keep track of in this blog is this: to play 100k hands of HU poker between now and when i start back with classes which is the last week of September. The hands can be NLHE or PLO(I'm learning PLO, less than 5k of HU PLO so far) and my stakes will probably be 2/4 and 3/6 for NLHE, possibly 5/10 if I run well and there's soft games, and 1/2+ for PLO. Since I'm going to be out of town from tomorrow till Sunday Im going to count my last two days as part of the 100k hands since I started a brand new DB in Holdem manager anyways.

I think if I actually am able to pull this off, and play/run well I will be able to play 5/10 HU on a regular basis not having to worry about game selection too much. That said, its gonna be hard. I have never played more than 25k hands in a month before(maybe the laziest person ever) and I also play the 4 larger Sunday tournaments each week(staked for these), and I don't usually mix tournaments and cash at the same time

Oh yea, and on monday my new monitor and video card is coming in. Ill have 2 24"s running should be good. So since this is officially a goal or a challenge or whatever I will post the first graph

Here is a bonus graph, this was all my HU hands on cake at 3/6 and 5/10. The best part of this graph was when the red line goes way up all of a sudden. That was a 4 tabling session versus maybe the worst reg I had ever played on cake played him for 2k hands in about 3 hours at my friends house in vegas
