Hey LeggoWorld!

My legs are still getting used to the amount of running they had to endure from paintballing but also from the daily routine of my life here.

Paintball was in a nutshell awesome, exhausting, self-discovering & frustrating.
  • Awesome in the sense that you finally can simulate how it feels to get hit. Furthermore as an avid FPS-gamer (COD2 European Champ, COD4 invite group) how it feels to shoot in real life. LIke proning, crouching, sprinting, asking for cover (no one did that lol)

We played gametypes like Hostage the Chick (hot chick was my hostage >:] ), Headquarters etc.
  • Exhausting in the sense that we played 5 matches, with a couple of breaks but no real water-drinking break. I come later on that but hydration is super important!! I get later to that because the title of this blogpost is ''Diet & Performance'', I just want to summarize my experience of paintball
  • It was Self-discovering in the sense that you get to learn that you are a n00b to the game. Accuracy of 9%? common shit for noobs like me. Getting owned by regulars? no shit sherlock. One way I felt like a fish well more like a camping Fish Also if something is new for me, I tend to want to improve asafp ( as soon as fucking possible :P )
  • Lastly it is frustrating as well. Your team loses, you lose. You don't get off spawn because 5 stupid idiots in your team are just BBQing around a campfire while the objective of the game is to raise the flag and no opponent can cross the middleline >.<
Personally it is frustrating that somethings u just suck when you start. It is also obviously proven that when you have loads of expectation of something, it is >>>>99% chance you will end up dissapointing. It is even feeling as dissapointing or less fun when you even know this Psychological Phenomena.
And this is one of the reasons I choose to study Business & Psychology because I just love these types of behaviour based on 1 subtle thing. Now I probably know why I love Marketing classes

Anyways I want to talk about Diet & Performance. I generally feel that they have a strong synergy with them.
People often say:
  • You are what you eat
And I support them for sure. We currently live in a Western society where food is a big surplus. MickeyD's here, Subway there, kebab the next hour etcetera.

Versus
Pretty polarized pictures but I think you know what I mean

I got hooked up with ''Peak Perfomance Poker'' displaying several stuff that opened my eyes back in the days I lived in Denmark and studied there. I had the luxury there of having a big studio so I could do some home excercises but also enjoyed the types of food that are available
I can expand on how I radically changed my diets but I will just give a brief overview of what my diet briefly is:
MONRING
** Natural Yoghurt (I only can buy low-fat but normal yoghurt is the best!)
with ** Low GI Muesli (Wheat Flakes, Jumbo Oat flakes, Toasted Wheat flakes, Raisins, Dates, Hazelnuts)
** an Apple, clementines or some grapes
** Strong espresso coffee with no sugar but some milk in it
** Asthma medication pill

Afternoon
!! This is a real tricky one for me. I simply have to have lunch around town which means the chanc e is likely I screw up here. so far I managed to stay cool but long-term I have to find a solution on this during the weeks
If I am eating in town it is like:
** Water during class & at lunch
** Sandwhiches at Subwayish things, special hamburgers without a bun but with extra salad (<- important)
** Buying an apple or something in the supermarket

If I am eating at home (Friday-sat-Sun) I eat like:
** Backrasher's // semi-bacon ( 3 slices )
** Fried eggs
** Some fried veggies or salad with mozzarella, olive oil, olives ( I can make picture son request or share recipes)
** Cranberry/Orange juice or fresh Apple Juice
** Fruit again as appetizer
** Multivitamin pill

Dinner & Evening
This is mostly fun as I like to cook so I mix it up and also plan ahead sometimes

** 1 1/2 chopped boneless pork chops
** 1/3 fresh peppers
** 1/3 fresh onions
** handful of frozen vegetables to mix it up
** If I have fresh brocolli, I chop it up in small pieces
** some leek rings
** If I want to have it spicy, I add chili
** 1-5 mushrooms
You just need a frying pan and a woksauce (Teriyaki, Sweet Sour) or even Indian curry will do. If you don't want that put shitload sof spices in there to make it taste well. Please don't use Ketchup (sugar), BBQ sauce (sugar) or sweet chili sauce ( sugarrrrrrrr) if you already drank a can of Coke or mountain dew or any other of this carbohydration crap
As a drink I mostly do a vanilla Wheyprotein supplement & water.
Then in the evening when I feel hungry, I either ignore it & go to bed or
*** some chocolate
*** oranges/apples/clementines
*** Digestive cookies

--
Obvious this can change during the week like 1 day I eat as lunch some instant noodles. the other day I dine in a restaurant etc.etc. You can deviate but do not deviate too much.
Last year in Denmark I had ''Sunday Pizzaday'' but really that kills the whole purpose of permformance :/
Couple of discussing things:

Low GI vs High GI; I already discussed this with Grogheadflow when he told me he didn't had much variety in his diet.

WHITE PASTA = REFINED = HIGH GI = BAD

Yes it tastes good but you really get energy spikes as if you play PLO HU daily. I only have brown pasta in my cupboard IF I ever eat pasta.
Basically I advocate not eating too much pasta, rice, white bread, buns, potatoes because think about it: what do they add in nutritional value?
** Pasta --> taste but shitloads of carb
** Rice --> taste in oriental food but carbs
** Noodles --> carbs & fat
** bun//white bread --> ''it tastes good but Hey the next hour I am hungry again''
** Potatoes --> Carbs/Starch

In a nutshell they are stomach fillers. Why do asian people sometimes eat JUST noodles? they fill their stomach.
Why do they eat Rice with meat in a 50/50 ratio? It fills their stomach.
Why do people eat Sandwhiches? It fills their stomach
etc.etc.
I am not forbidding u to eat it. That would be crazy. Just limit it. For instance if you have eaten an Asian meal ( yeah I am asianlike ) with 30% meat, 30% veggies, 40% rice. That's way too much rice. Keep it like 40% meat, 40% meat, 20% rice at the very least. 10-15% rice is perfectly fine especially if you like it ( I recommend Jasmin rice)

I still have to buy a balance for my weight but I feel fitter, more energetic and I can see my body mass (aka fat) shrinking

This seems like a long post but I want to have some discussion on this because I truely believe we can increase our perfomance by at least 25% on the poker tables.
WE are intellectuals. We are thinking players. We are thinking humans. So we need Powerfood like Omega-3 (Fish!), Proteins (Meat!), Good Carbohydrates (Vegetables/Fruits) & Fat ( Meat/Fish/Avocado)

- Gervinho

I will expand on GI food next time

Interesting post. I think the most important thing to realise is how your body reacts to certain foods becuase from that, we can replicate what we eat that makes us feel good!
- Bit off track, but I was born with a hole in my heart which fixed itself by the time I was 3 or 4, but basically my heart "set itself" at a really fast resting heart rate. I mean really, really fast, like 90bpm resting fast.
I'm a very fit guy, and train a good 6 days a week across a few martial art disciplines and fight prety much monthly, but I chew through a ridiculous amount of food!
What I'm eventually getting at, is after a session when I have prrotein shakes, and a bowl of rice, I fall asleep becuase of all the carbs my body is processing. Another eg is if I eat a whole bunch of lollies and drink coke or something, I don't get hypo, and I just burn through it, but I do feel like i can't concetrate as well.
For me to concentrate, I need to get up, have cereal for breakfast (Weet-Bix), and then eat lots of fruits, drink juice and basically fill msyelf up without givng my body too much to do.
So yeah, I think it's important to ffigre out what has what effect on you, and then learn to replicate it.

I did this by logging everything I ate, and the my mood/energy levels at different points during the day, and I'd highly recommend this as a good way to uncover some links that you may not think are logical, but are there none the less, and can be replicated at your will.
GL!

Sounds good Gerv

Here's a few suggestions/things to think about along the way---

Breakfast- Try Greek Yogurt- Chibani, in particular, is my favorite (14-18 grams of protein per serving!)

Lunch- I'd skip the juice. You'll be getting plenty of fruits from natural foods and most juices are high in sugar. For example, an orange has twice as much fiber and half as much sugar as a 12-ounce glass of orange juice.

Evenings- I'd try to limit the cookies, chocolate, and other sugars right before bed. You really don't want to spike your insulin levels before a long period of inactivity or you'll end up storing it as fat.

In response to your mini rant on carbs, I'd say you're a bit misinformed. Optimal macronutrient distribution is 20-35% of total kilocalories from fat, 10-35% from proteins, and 45-65% from carbs. Good carbs are nutrient dense foods and essential sources of energy for the body

In a diet like Atkins that eliminates carbs, the body will be forced to break down proteins to satisfy daily energy needs. This triggers a process called Ketosis which leads to the breakdown of muscle. Another point to keep in mind is that you'll be a lot hungrier without propper carbohydrate intake. I know from personal experience, the more I starve myself, the more likely I am to crash, binge eat, and start eating unhealthy again

Moving along, I saw no mention of nuts or legumes anywhere in your plan. Definitely something you need to add. Walnuts, almonds, and peanuts make great snacks and its easy enough to add some sort of beans to lunch/dinner.

As far as supplements, I'd add a fish oil and some sort of amino acid complex in addition to your multivitamin.

It doesn't seem like you're drinking much milk but I've switched to Almond Milk recently which has numerous health benefits.

Anyways, sounds like you're motivated and have a solid plan for success. Best of luck!

Yeah, and because you want to ''cut'', I would say 35% protein, 35% fat, rest carbs. I always use 3,5 gram protein for each kg, 1,5 gram fat, rest carbs, but you almost get the same results that way. Nothing else to add. I would also recommend same supplements as grandmaster did, and NO CARBS after dinner. And about sugar, eliminate them as much as possible. You don't need them. Before going to bed you can eat some cottage cheese. (slow protein, so good for during the night) But yeah, grandmaster says it all lol.

And btw, you don't need fruits if you eat enough vegetables. Fruit has a lot of sugar = fat.

Thanks for the comments which can improve my diet. Funny fact is that somehow, someway I managed to get a bit ill after I wrote my blogpost. Most likely it has to do due lack of sleep haha

I am allergic to nuts as in deadly so the only nuts I can eat are cashew nuts

I totally agree with sugar (cookies, chocolate & juices) so I definitly will throw those out.

I only drink 250-400ml milk a day when I take my protein shake.

The greek yoghurt thing sounds sweet as I dislike normal yoghurt, will try it out for sure thanks!

If you REALLY want to get ripped, also delete the milk. In milk is also a little bit sugar. Like Arnold said ''Milk is for babies''. But if you just want to live healthier the milk is fine

Your advice to eat brown pasta helped me a bit dude (even if it does taste like mud). I'm a machine at eating other stuff now as well.

Well me and Nic are both vegan now, so she's been cooking a ton of stuff. Fajitas, curry, TONS of smoothies and milkshakes (soya+B12), beans waffles vegan sausages, and with pasta now I put in a ton of vegetables, mostly mushrooms and tomatoes. Eat a lot of peppers as well, they more or less go in anything.

Love my blender tho! Wack in 5 bananas, vegan ice cream, a ton of strawberries, soya milk, blend it and then guzzle the lot it and it's pure power food.

Sounds cool with the blender thing! I still have to buy that one! btw Do you also take in ''good fats''? I assume you do in the form of olive oil, mozarella cheese (not sure but Spanish people eat it a lot said my spanish girl last year) & avocado

If you want to get food fats id recommend all milk fats and animal fats in general that are not processed. Worst kind of fats is like sunflower oil or transfats that can be found in chips or in some other processed foods. And then like some omega3 supplement should be good to have.

I guess I missed something, but what is your goal with the food thing? Just feel better? Or maybe also a certain goal body wise like loosing fat or gaining muscles? I mean for example, 5 bananas with ice cream is obv very nice, but if you want to loose fat, prob a bad idea

Roundcube and Student, are you talking to me? If so:

gerv: Cheese is out. Animals still die to make it, etc.

Roundcube: Again, animal fats and milk fats are out.

Student: My goal is for my brain to work better for reasons of poker and football and other endeavours. I've talked about this in other blogs, but my concentration got so bad and I had such a feeling of detachment that I struggled to put in more than 30 minutes of even D game+ per waking session. This was down to my diet and has improved a ton. I don't have a weight problem, it's always been the opposite and I do tons of exercise. I just need to eat well for brain power ........

My goal is Dan's one but also loose some fat ( In before lol_fat_asian_kid ). Fun fact tho that I met a Singaporean who studies in Holland just before I went to Ireland, he told me ''They call me fatty over there'' and I looked at him with a ''not sure serious face'' because he was just normal/semi-skinny
