Dealing with a downswing
Posted in Poker | View Comments (5)

So the past week or so I've lost 50k+ playing mid/high stakes PLO, both live and online. This was a substantial part of my roll and I'm a sad panda. I just wanted to see if there's anyone else who've gone through a pretty crushing downswing and how they dealt with it.

Poker can be a brutal game sometimes and you can really learn to hate it when things are going really badly, 50k is a massive amount to lose for anyone and i couldn't imagine how that must feel for you to go through that. Even great and consistent players like Nanonoko go though brutal downswings at some point its standard variance if nothing else although most of the time its more than that.

I've never lost that much (need to have it to lose it would be my problem) so can't really help without sounding stupid. Sucks to hear man and hope it turns around for you.

Damn Sorry that's very rough. I mean the way I usually avoid that is nitty broll management. However I think too nitty of bankroll management is costing me money long-term, so that has it's problems as well. Main prevention is what I try to do.

I think you should journal and iron out your feelings and form a new plan to play whatever stakes you're rolled for. You have to try to put your downswing in the past as hard as that'll be. Try to think of the long-term I.e. your poker career, 50k should be not that much of your total profits.

You just have to find a reset button somehow, as difficult as it might seem. Otherwise things just get worse. Definitely read Jared's latest book mental game of poker to help you do this.

Funny, I also think of this bit of the Rudyard Kipling poem 'If'

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;

....
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
