Hubble 3D

I saw Hubble 3D at the IMAX in Sydney over the weekend and it was amazing. The narration (care of Leonardo DiCaprio) is predictable, the interviews with the crew less than stunning, the film lasts only 45 minutes, and it’s still amazing.

This is of course due to the stunning visuals, and the use of 3D makes this more of an intergalactic theme park ride than a film. I’m already particularly fascinated by space so this was especially enjoyable for me, but I’m confident that almost everyone will find this interesting. It’s impossible for us to be able to truly grasp the enormity of our universe, with our galaxy (made up of hundreds of billions of stars) being just one of hundreds of billions of galaxies. But (seemingly) physically travelling through photographs produced by the Hubble telescope will at least elicit a response to the idea of the magnitude we’re actually dealing with.

Consider this: within this film you are witnessing images of stars over 5 billion light years away. That means you are looking at pictures of events that occurred BEFORE the Earth was formed. We're not merely travelling through space in 3D, we're travelling through time.

I just think space is a really fucking cool thing to think about, and Hubble 3D in particular is an exceptional experience. I am rarely that impressed by anything, but this one blew me away. Go see it wherever you can find it playing.

In the meantime, here are a few images taken by Hubble to whet your appetite.

In other news, the Pokerstars Big Game has returned for a new round of shows. Last week’s shows (week 4) included Viffer, Antonio Esfandiari, Chau Giang, Barry Greenstein and businessman Rick Rahim along with a new loose cannon, and were in the most part pretty darn entertaining. Ike also makes an appearance late in the week. You can check that out at http://thebiggame.pokerstars.net.

Till next time.
