Today is my best friend's birthday, and as a gift I decided to make a bet for him. I put $100 on Tottenham Hotspur to beat Arsenal in the North London derby at a price of 5.25 to 1.

With Spurs 2-0 down at half time and inferior in every department, we had all lost hope. It would indeed be another year of emptiness and misery. But then...

Bale scores in the 50th minute. Van der Vaart converts a penalty in the 67th. And Kaboul pops up with a dramatic headed winner in the 85th.

My boy collects the money (and was certainly happy about it), but I had bought him more than mere cash. I had bought him an emotional roller coaster ending with the most elusive of feelings, that Sasquatch of sensations: happiness.

Gambling: bringing people together.

Till next time.

As the title suggests, I'm looking for some book recommendations. I ordered a bunch of books a few months ago and just finished the last of them, so I'm looking for a new batch.

I'm generally going to be more attracted to non-fiction books (in the recent past evolutionary biology etc), but I just finished Fight Club and that's got me in the mood for a cool, well written novel (not really into fantasy stuff though). I'm also partial to a good biography.

So yeah, help me construct a good Amazon list for my next delivery.

On it so far:

- Steven Pinker: 'The Blank Slate',

- Adam Carolla: 'In Fifty Years We'll All Be Chicks',

- Sam Harris: 'The End of Faith'.

Whoever recommends the best book (that I buy/read) will win a personalised, signed 2nd hand copy of that book (happy to forge whoever's signature you'd like), if they want it, and if they PM me in a few months asking if I liked their book the best, and if I decide not to lie to them in order to save the time/energy it would take to re-ship said book. Good luck.

Till next time.

After very brief research this is what I've gone for in this years Melbourne Cup (one of the biggest horse races in the world).

It's a 5 horse trifecta with the favourite as a 'roving banker', which means it has to finish in the top 3 while some combination of the other 4 horses have to make up the remainder of the placegetters.

Here are my horses:

3. So you think (Roving Banker)

1. Shocking

8. Americain

11. Descarado

24. Maluckyday

I have absolutely no idea what I stand to win if it comes off, but you know, I assume it's something.

The race starts in a bit over 3 hours.

Till next time.

EDIT: Shipped it for ~$1.7K profit.

Here's a look at the cracker that Nani scored yesterday for Manchester United vs Tottenham. I know it's still early in the season, but this one will be tough to beat.

Short version

Extended version

Explanation:

After Nani goes down under a challenge claiming a penalty (that isn't given), he places his hand on the ball as he appeals to the ref. The goalkeeper (Gomes) sees the handball and assumes it will be a free kick, so he places the ball down looking to take it. The problem for him is that the referee never blew his whistle for a free kick, so when Nani looks back in confusion the ref tells him he is free to play on. Nani puts the ball in the net and is pretty happy about it. The linesman then flags to let the referee know that he saw a handball, but after a brief discussion the referee overalls his linesman and awards the goal.

THE WAYNE ROONEY SAGA TIMELINE

3 May 2009: Wayne Rooney says "I am happy here and I'd sign a new contract at any time. I want to stay at this club for the rest of my career. I will sign an extension any time the club wants me to."

22 October 2010: Rooney signs a new five-year contract with Manchester United.

Sometimes it's a little too easy.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to grab some quick feedback on my latest project. For months I’ve been trying to come up with something really cool (and profitable) to work on within the poker world, and now it looks like it might just be becoming a reality.

I often hear people talking about the next big poker boom. Some say it’s going to be in Asia, others say it’ll be the result of legislation changes. But I think everyone has so far been missing out on the best potential market of all: kid’s poker.

Think about it. Children’s television is a huge industry. Toys are even bigger. Kids get money from their parents for whatever they want. And their brains aren’t nearly as developed as adults, so it's possible they'll be even weaker than the famed 2003 online poker fish.

With all this in mind, I have decided I am going to write the ground-breaking kids TV show that will bring poker into mainstream children’s entertainment. I have a meeting with execs from Nickelodeon next week (I’m going to try to convince them to develop a whole channel called Pokerlodeon), and I’m just looking for any ways I can tighten my pitch before the big day. I’ll probably only get one shot at this, so I’d better make it count

The show will be called ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranges’.

At first I was concerned that my idea was too derivative from another existing television show, but then I thought, ‘come on, if a show as respected as Trading Spouses can rip off Wife Swap, then why even try to hold myself to a higher standard? ’. And then I was cool with it.

Our heroes will wear different coloured spandex outfits, and will fight imbalance wherever they find it in life. Here is a rough script for the trailer:

NARRATOR: Starting this fall on Pokerlodeon, the only Poker channel marketed exclusively to kids, it’s the Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranges!!!

All your favourites are here!! Narrow Range {thin MMPR}, Strong Range {ripped MMPR}, Split Range {MMPR who becomes two versions of himself when powered up} and River Check-Raising Range {Self-explanatory}.

Watch as they encounter the toughest situations imaginable..

MMPR1: Hey, why are they playing on the see-saw?

MMPR2: [staring into camera] It’s always good to balance your ranges!

MMPR1: Hey, why is he eating when we’ve got villains to catch?

MMPR2: [staring into camera] It’s sometimes good to widen your ranges!

MMPR1: Hey, why is he trying to catch that bird?

MMPR2: It’s sometimes theoretically good to employ a Game Theory Optimal strategy such that our opponent should be indifferent between calling and folding.

MMPR1: Right…but what does that have to do with catching a bird?

MMPR2: [Slowly backs away from the camera]

NARRATOR: And don’t be surprised to see some mysterious, unexpected characters.

MMPR1: Hey, who the heck are you?

MMPR2: Relax, that’s just my no good twin brother, Capped Range.

MMPR3: [A MMPR wearing black, but with an additional baseball cap] Sup.

NARRATOR: It’s the Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranges. Wednesdays at 6.30, only on Pokerlodeon.

Any feedback is appreciated.

*NOTE: I haven’t cleared this idea with PokerStars quite yet (though I'm sure they'll be fine with it). Until then the views of this blog do not represent PokerStars in any way.

At the risk of diluting my impact by recommending too many shows around here, I'm going to go ahead and throw this one out there: Archer.

It's an animated satire of a spy drama, starring H. Jon Benjamin as the main character 'Sterling Archer'. It's a show heavily reliant on dialogue with a hint of Arrested Development about it, although it's possible I'm just being tricked by the presence of a few AD alums as voice talent.

I think you should check it out.

Till next time.

Here's a clip of my favourite footballer of the past few seasons, Dimitar Berbatov. This is the 2nd goal of a match winning hat-trick.

Berbatov's 2nd goal v Liverpool

He has received a lot of hate from the media/fans since he joined United, but hopefully (for me) this will be his season.

Till next time.
