Does America even care?

I mean I was interested to see how big this news is with the general public on the other side of the pond and looked to see if it made front page news... barely an article (theres been more about in the uk news) maybe im not looking in the correct sources but I thought America's national papers would be 'free press' if the govt is trying to keep this on the dl and out of the limelight (not that im saying theres some massive conspiracy) but it does seem that no one who is unaffected really cares.

The fact that online poker being illegalised hasnt been breaking news isnt completely shocking to me as I believe the majority of American's have been under that impression since 2006 (which is what led me to look into the press coverage in the first place) so running that story might have casued a lot of confusion/annoyance. However the fact that there is no mention of a $3bn lawsuit is a bit of a shock. I mean a $16m payment by BP for the oil disaster has made headlines this weekend and Enron was all over the news everyday from day one, I know these issues obviously encompass a much wider audiance but money is money.

The point is that engaging in online gambling is a matter of personal choice and I cant believe there hasnt been an uproar about freedoms being resticted. (I think I voice the opinion of the majority of the western world outside the U.S. by saying) It's especially surprising as America advocates her sense/perception of freedom as being far beyond that of any other nation and more than almost any other exported product to the point where it is almost her national identity (possibly freedom is second to the right to bare arms as it casuses much more controversy).
On top of this $3bn is a huge chunk of money, what other industries has that sort of money been sought after in the courts as damages.

I truely do feel sorry for everyone who has a large chunk of their roll, or even a meaningful chunk of money stuck in transition. Actually I feel a great sorrow for people who just want to play poker and im glad to see people are trying not to panic and looking to stay postive, who knows there is the potential for a lot of good to come out of this provided the right people are left to make the key decisions..

However legal change will take a long a time, especially if its not a pressing issue, and even then its got to be passed through so I wouldnt hold your breath about playing online anytime soon. I would write to the PPA asking them to let you know what you and others can do to help. I would think gettting large numbers of support from those who dont play poker can only be benefical in the future. For now I hope to take advantage of a softer? PS/FTP playerpool (as people are alway piping on about how much softer euro sites are) and hope us outsiders are allowed back in to play without excusions as soon as you are else I imagine the majority of any of the new soft money from potential future regulated online activity will have already been divided up by the topdogs before we get there.

GL to those of you who cant play for the foreseable future with whatever you decide to do.

That middle paragraph is exactly what I'm thinking. For a country that values personal freedom to the point of being able to carry guns, I can't believe there isn't more being made of the attack on liberty the whole campaign against poker represents.

i think people are more concerned with keeping the right to abortions and stuff like that. not saying i don't agree but it's not like there is nobody with a cause over here.

So many people are confused as to what happened friday. The big 3 sites got charged with FRAUD and probably rightfully so, if you read the indictment. Online gambling is no more illegal today than it was two weeks ago. It's the bank fraud that brought the sites down. That's not really anyone's fault except the sites.

Eggo I don't think anyone's that confused. The original UIEGA was designed to stop Americans playing online poker. The sites defying that is what's lead to this. Saying it's about fraud and not poker is just a technicality.

You can't fight an injustice by breaking the law. The whole point all this time is that we are just poker players, trying to make a living and didn't deserve to be treated like criminals.

But now, by committing bank fraud, the sites really are criminals now! They hurt their own cause (and ours obviously).
