One year later: My rise to the top

Well if you haven't heard my story in Aug 07 I busted a $10k BR or so and had busted it around middle of July. I had $700 in cash on me and $84 in rakeback due sometime in August. I decided I needed a break and went to North Carolina where I stayed with my best friend for exactly 1 month. We mowed lawns for a little bit but we both made like no money during this month. I arrived home August prepared to go to school and had absolutely no clue what the future would be for me. Going to school was very hard for me because at the time I had 0 desire to go to classes let alone do my work.

I remember clearly the second day I got back with $200 in cash left I went to the local kennel club and played $1/2NL with $80. I played pretty nitty and was just trying to see cheap flops and stack idiots. My skill at poker at this was good to ok mainly because I had been playing for 3 years already and naturally I'm way ahead of random live idiots or microstakes online players. I end up getting it in with KK in a 4-way pot and scooping when I flop Kings full and beat another dudes AA. Obvously I was really excited and moreso to just to know I have more ammo to make a run at it. I played the two more weeks left in Aug and made about $8k at live poker which happened because of the $4,700 tourny score I had at the end of the month I was so happy and tired on my way home . I also did well online as you see hear. Such a great feeling for me at the time. I also made a couple hundred in RB and a couple hundred at PLO which capped off a very solid half of a month considering what I had to work with.

September is where I had to make the decision of quitting school. I just decided it wasn't for me as you read above and thought that taking a year off might allow me to figure out what I want. Poker went very good and I turned $300->$10->$27k after winning a bunch in at live $5/10 $100 max. I met my really good poker friend Rob who had a pretty important role in my growing of my live poker game. We were both in the same boat at the time and have pretty similar stories besides him being older. I spent a lot of hours playing at the Hollywood Hard Rock and often played from midnight to 8 A.M when the games were good. My sleep schedule was a little out of control but I was ok with life at that point. I started playing HU this month and was playing 37/32...LOL I specifically remember an early morning session with 20suckouts who quit me after this hand. I'm pretty sure this was the biggest pot of my life at the time. A the time I'm like what a fish not knowing how much closer to standard the hand really is. I think I was a pretty big nit who was just a decent HU player at the time. I also crushed BabyJesus22(mid-stakes bumhunter) for $3200, first time I ever really crushed someone. Great feeling. +2400 at Omaha +1500 in RB +4500 at live poker=sweet. I cut off my spreadsheet use for live poker results half way through the month

In October I was sort of forced to get a new car because the 93 Jeep Cherokee I had was unreliable and causing too many problems. I had enough confidence in my self to take a hit and still survive so I went out and bought a brand new 2008 grey Mazda 3 which I still have now. I consider the decision to be good to ok because live poker was pretty consistent albeit a grind. I did buy it during the middle of the month when I was doing good and course I hit my first big road bump which was rnning terrible at $5/10 6-max. I'm unsure why I didn't continue playing $2/4 HU but I know I ran very bad in allin spots at $5/10. Pretty rough month as I put in a lot of volume and made just a little after making a down payment of $5k on the car. I think I ended the month with $31k but had it to $40k at one time. Breakeven at Omaha but I did make ~$6k at live poker and $2k in RB. I played a bunch with Grimstarr who was god ****en awful at HU and SILLYGOOSER who is a clownand Kadabra who was crazy back in his time(met him IRL funny guy). I developed my HU game exponentially but was still making blatant mistakes looking back. Hand opened my eyes. Knew he was a nit but my hand is worth socks vs Grim by river.

I remember November 07 to be a very frustating month. Could not make money and played a ton of hours at the casino often times just napping in between hands living the anti-dream or nightmare. Lost $6k live $1k at NL and $5k at PLO. OK whatever one bad month I moved on but was pretty unhappy. Unfortunately I developed the degenerate in me this month which grew from frustartion. You have to have gamble in you but you this **** gets you bust. I had about a $20k BR when I played these hands. Hand 1 villian is Muckemsayuhh aka Cole South. At least I owned him but did ***** hit and run him : ( Hands 2/3 are vs mastrblstr who at the time I thought was a clown for his play in hand 2. HAHA! Wow times have changed. After hand 3 I drove straight to the casino extremely tired and ready to get unstuck and tilted off some more money. I bled a lot of money this month. After expenses I ended the month with $13k.

Pre-Christmas December was just an extension of November as it was just a lot of wasting time and making no money. I was pretty depressed for awhile not so much from lack of money but I hated the lifestyle. Such a ****ing pointless grind and all I wanted was a cool house the right girl and go from there. I did not envision poker going anywhere as is the case when you struggle. I started realizing that I wasn't going anywhere and kind of freaked out at the thought of continuing to float through life like a loser. I had too much skill heart and charisma in me to be this much of a loser. I took a week and regrouped, enjoyed Christmas and came back focused and determined. I also started using the spreadsheet for live poker after Christmas. I was pretty motivated to get back at it. Won $7k at live poker mostly all post-Christmas. +$10k month ~$23k BR

January was the month I thought I was going to be a great player. I put a lot of things together in my game and having great results. I tried my hardest this month sort of motivated to start a new year and do something special for once. I randomly decided to go to Tunica with my friend Rob at the last minute in the middle of the month. I had a great weekend and won $3,500. I remember shortstacking the $5/10 PLO game where everyone was sitting like $5k deep and limping into every single pot as well as calling every raise PF because they thougt they would stack somebody if they could bet AAxx postflop. I was up $6k at one point playing pretty solidly and I remember one pot where an Arab dude called a 3/4 pot river shove of mine when I bluffed with the best hand. Can't remember the hand but I know he had top pait and I had a higher top pair. I was just amazed at the play. Horrendous. I lost $2500 back in the game but I was dead tired and had to leave two days later. Can't wait to play live PLO again. Played a bunch of HU online against gopheresque, motherflusher, sakisaki(8 hour match) and Pimpkane. I remember clearly losing $4k in a live $5/10 $100 max game playing all night and winning the tournament the next morning to get partially unstuck. Inspired by my live PLO experience I decide to give HU a shot and had great results. I really thought HUPLO was going to be my thing for the longrun at the time. I was addicted to the game. I thought I was pretty good and had great results on small stakes but stacks we're flying in and out so I played with 100-200 buyins and was feeling good. My HUnl game was still lacking because I was playing a 40/33 which is way too damn tight. I think the HUnl scene was evolving around this time ie tougher regs, people caring about game selection, people figuring out optimal 3/4betting ranges etc. I was probably a little behind the curve at this time.

Unfortunately my degen shot went terrible again losing like $6,400 to Erik Lingdren. Can't stop degen you can only hope to contain it. I guess. This hand tilted me for a while. Later on in the month I degen shot again this time against DaEvils so obv my control was breaking down again. All in order back to back to back. I ***** quit him once again but I have a lot to say if it was wrong ethically of me. Standard. As you can see I had terrible results but mostly was just poor playing and game selection and too much degen. Another setback and hurdle. I never learn. $40k BR to start March.

I started off March focused on getting back to my bread and butter which was my HU nl game. I started playing a bunch of $400 HU and crushed the games and played a bunch of $400 6max with equal success. I was pretty determined to not lose this month and figure out how to crush again. I tried going to bed on the right time, getting in shape, eating right to do all the little things to be the best I could be. I remember being in the green at every single level except for 0.15/0.30 where I was flipping. +2k at PLO = ~ $90k BR

April was a pretty stellar month. I remember well just crushing the $1k games to no end. Was on such a tear and thought this was my time. Then I woke up one morning with a $130k BR and played Thinker00 at $50/100 who I later hear was Mezmerized? Still unsure of who he is but I lost $60k pretty fast to him and was devastated. Funny looking back but painful at the time. I ended shattering my keyboard into pieces afterwads pretty angry at myself for ****ing up. I don't care that I ran bad or whatever it was just a dumb idea and completely ****ed up my momnetum. He won every big and medium pot and I just did not when any off him. My friend gets robbed for $15k at a home game we were in in the beginning of the month. I end up rebuilding to $100k and continue being a retard abd sit with Urin when I was tilted one day. I was up a little and then get nailed. The third hand is against INTERNET POKERS and bothered me for a long time. Then hold to win small profit. He quit me this time. As you see I played a bunch of good players and took some rediculous shots and was lucky to survive it all for this long. I stopped using live poker spreadsheets once again this month. Probably a sign that I was losing discipline.

May was my favorite month of this past year. I started the month by winning a local tournament for $16k. Later in the month I woke up to my friend Rob almost begging me to play the $100 PLO+rebuys with him. I oblige and win it for $85k. At the end of May I played the $2500 LAPT in San Jose Costa Rica. 2 orbits in I 4bet/fold KK pf lose 1350 of 10k and get shown AA. 2 days later I'm at the final table With Zugwat and Traheho 2nd in chips to Zugwat. I screw up a hand where I coldshove AQ into a raise and 3bet and they have AA and KK and get 7th for $30k. I hardly play any cash this month breaking even at NL but losing a ton at PLO late. Costa Rica was a blast because nothing else compares to success at live tournaments. You get all the attention and being at the final table with all the money on the line was a blast. Dissappointing end though. Ended the month with ~ $200k BR

I ended up developing a PLO addiction in late May and ended up getting destroyed in June. Clowns like Pixkim just ran redic hot on me and I get smoked. My game was spewy at the time and not refined like it is now. I lose $24k at NL and $66k at PLO. I played a lot of poker at Paul Wolfe's game and must have won ~$120k total in that game. He found some pretty rediculous players and he went off on me one night. I also remember winning a $36k pot one night. I won about $30k in June which includes all my play.

Dennis started the hand with $14k and Donnie started the hand with $8k and I cover. Dennis very well could be the most retarded dude with a lot of money I have ever met. Donnie has a clue. Dennis raises the $50 straddle to $275 which has been doing slightly more than his fair share. I peel 22 in the SB and Donnie comes along in the BB. Flop comes 22K with 2 diamonds. Great. I check Don checks and Dennis bets $300 into $1k I call and Don calls. Turn brings a 7c and I lead for $1250. At this point of the hand it feels cool because 1) there are really no tough decisions if someone raises I'm just shoving and 2) I 'm going to win a lot of money. Don tanks plays with his chips shoves Dennis snap shoves for $13k and I beat Don's 77 and Dennis' AA.

July is where I put the fuel and the fire together and I went on a huge tear. I ran pretty hot and took lots of shots but mostly shortstacked games and put together a solid month. I started dedicating myself to PLO and taking shots at high stakes games where it worked out for me. I did at times continue in bad games but that's another story. This was a very swingy month was way underolled for these games but I know that most of the time I as in a game where I would have been making oney in the long run. My PLO game improved a ton in July and I'd like to think this is where I will be in the near and far future. This hand was the highlight of July. Sorry for repititiveness.

Started off terrible after a huge failure at $500/$1k cap losing $260k there. Soon after I won $560k at Omaha avenging that. Then last night I get to sit with Lady Marmalede who is Guy Lalibirte IRL.

Full Tilt PLO Aug '07 - Aug '08

So from Aug '07 I went from having $284 left to having about $970k to my name 1 year and 6 days later. Obviously I was lucky to never bust but I think my PLO play recently is the reason why I skyrocketed. I'm like fairly confident that the money I made recently is due to my play. Overall I'm doing great agaisnt the stake I'm playing. I know I'm a degen but I've always had enough control to just drop and grind when I needed to and always had enough skill to have a good bread and butter game when grinding was the option. I get a lot of heat from players about my game but we'll see what happens in the future and long run as far as my poker journey is concerned. Time will tell and I'm not banking on continuing a "heater" but sure that I will improve enough to climb past HS "icons" in time. Just glad I have the opporunity to make a run at it and get to the top(PA PI Durrr OMG status). I'm not just hoping either...

This is too fast and your bankroll is too small in order to play the nosebleeds. I know, that right now you feel on top of the world and indestructable, but many have fallen in similar fashion.

How is it possible that you won a million online and you are playing in 150k pots?
You got there by being a br degen, hope you will know when to stop and reevalute...
