Poker posts and stories
So the WSOP events (esp the ME) have been fairly frustrating. In the ME I was down to 6k after level one, a good amount due to Jem87 being at my table and knowing who I was, but me having no idea who he was. Yay!
I haven't played much poker as I am actually taking some time to enjoy Vegas which has been an awesome experience so far. This week we've actually partied pretty hard and gone to Ghostbar, Body English, and Moon. They have all been fun but I don't think there will be any pictures from there .
Brett did upload some video footage from the birthday party so here it is. Rob is at the right side of the poker table just at the beginning, and Craig is standing up at the left side of the table. The zoom in later on is of Aaron:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-uytfk3RTqI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-uytfk3RTqI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Additionally, I manned up and paid the $80 for a picture taken of me during one of the events. Mainly because Craig still has not given me any of the large amount of pictures he has . So here is my (very tired) picture:
So I think that's all for now. I heard UB had more superusers. Pretty sure I'm done with that site.

So I've spent about 3 hours trying to convert and successfully upload my video blog but somehow it never seems to work. It stinks I have to upload it to YouTube or Google Video because apparently it takes a whole new system to be able to view videos on this page (which as far as I know is true because the 2 video blogs that any other sites have done all involve YouTube).
So let's recap the entire trip of Vegas. I got here with Danielle on the 15th late at night. After meeting our roommates (Craig, etown/Brett, and scandieslol/luke) we went to bed. The next day we met up with Jay/SEABEAST and his girlfriend Annette and now we had our house. My birthday was the 19th and at midnight we went to this club Mix which I believe was at Mandalay Bay. Craig somehow managed to take 199 pictures and it was hilarious because they got progressively worse throughout the night. It was a lot of fun though and I'm pretty sure ended with me sprinting up the stairs to my bed.
The next night I had rented out the Celebrity Suite at the Palms hotel. I was kind of disappointed with the way I was treated by the Palms hotel staff - despite renting out one of the marquee suites in the entire hotel, I was denied pretty much any concierge-related help, Danielle and I were called "kids" by the on-site manager, and it took forever to get anything while in the room, including about 20 minutes to "run up" 4 bottles of water. It sucks that the Palms will never get any of my gaming action ever, but that is their loss I suppose.
There were quite a few pictures taken at the party; however, they are all on Craig's camera. I will upload them as soon as he does. Additionally, Brett took some video camera footage, and is uploading that as well. The party seemed like a success and it made me really happy that everyone was telling me it was a great party. I brought in a poker table + professional dealer (apparently Blair Rodman's wife) and also had a professional bartender. The dealer got really really nervous before everyone started showing up, but calmed down when she found out everyone was really nice. It makes me feel bad because she asked me what sort of guests were coming, and I said a lot of poker players who are young and more successful than they should be at their ages. She all of the sudden got really nervous and I assume it was because she was expecting to get berated or something by the players (assumably due to past experiences) which is a shame that this occurs, but I told her that everyone was appreciative of their situation and was very nice.
I have to make an entirely new paragraph to thank Danielle for majorily planning the party and coming up with some fun ideas, but also to thank Aaron for helping us put together everything the day of. The party would not have been nearly the success it was without either of them.
A couple days after my party, I decided to do the whole live poker thing. The night before I played in my first WSOP event (PLO8 FTW!), I sat down at a $25/$25NL table at the Rio when myself, Craig, Brett, and Luke went to play. To my left is some youngish glasses looking kid with lots of chips. I bought it for 10k completely in chips like a typical live idiot and we were ready to play. I start typically raising most of the hands and about 10 hands in I call an UTG raise of 125 OTB with 92ss (he had 10k!). That kid to my left squeezes and I decide that I am going to try to: 1) win a 20k pot and 2) show down 92ss. So I call but fold a flop where I hit a backdoor flush draw due to about 50 live strength tells.
So after the hand the kid stars making the standard I'm-an-online-player-and-I-want-to-find-out-your-screen-name comments, such as "**** live poker," so I ask him if he plays 25/50 online. He said no he plays 5/10 and sometimes 10/20, and asks what my screen name is. I pretend not to hear and ask him what his screen name is. He says SmartLAG on FTP (jfish on 2p2) and I introduce myself as Greg Brooks. Vishal seemed nice but left after about 10 minutes (fortunately for me, because I like to raise a ton and didn't want someone active-ish to my direct left with 10k as well).
So let's chat about some hands! The session went really well and I booked exactly a 23k win after tipping my change. The table was fairly soft (there were about 5 live pros at the table after all! ). For almost all of these hands I had a psychotic image, so take that into consideration as well.
Ok so this hand I didn't have that image because I had recently gotten to the table. I raise T7o in the CO, BTN calls, SB (old man) calls. Flop comes KQ5 and I cbet... SB calls. Turn comes a 7 that puts a backdoor flushdraw up there, and the SB c/c again. The river is a blank 5, but the guy stares at me and donks 1000 into the 1700ish pot. I take that into heavy consideration (staredown = weakness trying to intimidate) and make it 2600 total. He calls and shows AK. I flip over T7o (ALWAYS show bluffs at showdown, because if you muck people might not understand/notice that you bluffed).
The game starts to break to 4 handed, and I probably have like 8k at this time. I 3bet a CO open who is some tightish kid with 74dd, and he calls. The flop comes 783 with two spades, and he c/r my cbet of 550 (into the 950) to 1800. I call planning to fold to a turn shove because I don't think he has the stones to bluff the turn if it comes a blank. The turn is a Jack, however, and we check through. The river is a ten (873JT) and the flush misses, and he jams for 4500ish. I go into the tank for probably 15 minutes and finally fold. I asked him if I could get 2 guesses as to what he had (he said he "wasn't happy" with the way he played the hand) so I said 9T and J9. He said "those are weird guesses" but I'm pretty sure he had T9 regardless.
So the very next hand I raise K4hh somewhere in EP, and get 2 callers, including some live pro SB. Flop comes Q57hh and my cbet of 400ish gets c/red by the SB to 1200. We have about 6k behind because I reloaded for a little. I call. The turn comes a 6, giving me the OESD and the flush draw, and when he bets 1800 I decide i Have 0 FE. With 3700 behind after the call, and assumably 14-15 outs agaisnt his set, I have over 4:1 and need only slightly more than 2:1 to call. So I do and spike a lovely 9h river. He checks, I shove, he complains and huffs and puffs for a few minutes and calls. I win and my session is saved because I definitely about to quit. The pot woundup being like 14-15k which just demonstrates how big live plays.
So I'm up a little now continue to play lots of hands. The 3 live pros at the table are button straddling, which means they bet 50 OTB blind, and now the first player to act preflop is the SB, then BB, then UTG, etc. It's ridiculous and later in the night I had 2 live pros to my direct right so that was annoying since every one of my blinds was a straddle hand.
Button straddles in the 7 seat (I'm in the 4) and the 10 seat makes it 225. I call with 66, and so does one other person. 700ish in the pot. Flop comes J53 and 10 seat checks. I bet 550 and 10 seat calls. Turn K, check check. River 9 he checks, I fire 1750, he calls and mucks.
2 more live pros sit down...

yaya I'll get to my bday pics. It was a lot of fun and everyone kept telling me it was a great party so I'm really excited.
Anyway, people have been asking me to post hands so I will quickly post a teaser from today when I kind of owned Menlo (huge brag IMO he's filthy good). He was playing pretty aggressively towards me most likely because he knows I'm not a regular in the 50/1 deep games:

Vegas is super exciting and I cannot wait to turn 21. Yesterday I went over to the Palms and rented out the Celebrity Suite for my party after we ate dinner at N9ne which was very good but not amazing. I'm fairly excited for my party because it Danielle and Aaron (strangely enough) are co-planning it so it will certainly be interesting.
I am headed over to Paris for lunch, and hopefully going to some Asian place for dinner because I'm in the mood. I cannot play live poker yet obviously, and that's ok because I'm hearing some pretty horrible tournament stories. Although Jay (SEABEAST) took most of Ivey's chips yesterday so hopefully he posts about that becuase it's hilarious to find out that Ivey was limp/folding and limp/calling a lot at a 6m tournament.
As for poker, yea it's going pretty well. I'm in a rush right now so i will just leave with this: up 360 since May 29, and that doesn't include the 90 from the UB scandal. I promise I will make another post by tomorrow and it will include hand histories.

This will be a very quick blog update because I want to save a lot of info for my next one, which will be a video blog, but it has been a few days since my last update so I still wanted to post something.
This one will just be about poker, and unfortunately I'm not on my computer right now so it won't include hands. However...
-Yesterday I got my refund from UB (from the superuser scandal... look it up on 2p2 if you need the cliffnotes). It was to the tune of 88.9k. Ship it!
-Given the boost to my online BR which I had wanted to increase before I moved back up to 25/50, I decided it was time for another go. I won a little more than 30k yesterday after this said decision, including a 29k pot. I guess I'll outline that one:
14.5k effective stacks, I raise 44 in the CO to 175. I get 3bet to 515 from the button and call. Flop comes out 34Qr. I c/c a bet of 925. Turn K, check check. River 8 (Board is 34QK8 and the pot is about 2900ish) I check he bets 2350 I shove for 11.4k total. He thinks and calls with K8. Normally I would say this is an easy fold but I had shown down 28ss in a 3bet pot about 30 hands ago and I also showed 87o for a 5bet bluff vs him about 10-20 hands ago so I'm not sure.
-Today I played more and I won about 10k playing NL2k and 30k playing NL5k for a total on the day of about 40. This was my biggest winning day ever IIRC.
So, that's 90 + 40 + 30 = 160k in the last two days that I didn't have before then. Holler.

So last week I went over to Danielle's house where she was being interviewed for the Today Show. Four local schools in our area (elementary to middle schools) have about 50 girls who are donating their hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Pantene Beautiful Lengths is a program where individuals can donate 8 or more inches of hair to cancer patients who have lost their hair during treatment.
When Danielle was 13, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease. She actually went through chemotherapy twice(!), because she was declared cured ("in remission"), but then more malignant cells were found in her body. Of course, to ensure the second set fully went away, they had to give her a very high amount of chemotherapy. Danielle lost her hair twice during this process.
The Today Show got involved when they discovered the local girls were donating their hair to this cause. I personally found it very touching that young teenage girls were willing to do this because hair is considered sacred at that age. In addition to covering the event, the Today Show wanted to interview a person or two from the town that had been affected by cancer. About a month ago, Danielle got a call and was selected as a candidate for the show. They eventually chose 2 out of the 10 candidates and Danielle was one of them, so two producers came over to tape an interview and collect pictures/memories last week. They came for about 5-6 hours, and conducted additional interviews with Danielle at her middle school, and seemed very moved by her whole story.
Today the taping took place and aired at around 10 AM, but I included the video so everyone could watch it. I am very proud of Danielle because I thought she did a very good job and was very well-composed at all times (apparently I am in the video when they go to hug the girls... I am sitting down on the way right in the yellow shirt):

In related news, tomorrow is our four year anniversary so I suppose it's time to get a gift for that . It's pretty amazing that we've been together for four years, and it's pretty crazy thinking about how far we've come. I have a positive outlook on our future because we are still both putting in a lot of effort into our relationship and it is a very rewarding experience. I also would like to take this time to formally thank Danielle for putting up with me for four years.
On Friday I head down to Jacksonville, Florida for my brother's final baseball series of his freshmen college career. It will be fun to hang out with my family and relax for a couple days.
I also am getting very excited for Vegas and can't wait to head down there in mid-June. I will really enjoy playing in a few of the tournaments (after I turn 21) and am working on my tournament game/ICM to maximize my chances of going deep. Speaking of tournaments, Donkament Sunday went horribly! I wanted to shoot my brains out after 4 of the 8 or so hours. I did alright overall, but I'm not doing that again for a long time .

I browsed through the lobbies of FTP/PS and spoke to clayton/chewy about tournaments to play on Sunday, and I decided I am going to take the ~10 hour plunge! This will be good if nothing else for me to get some tournament experience in before WSOP time. In preparation, I mapped out all the tournaments I want to play (I had 12 underlined which means "must play," and probably 20 others). I'll certainly post how I wound up doing with a list of the tournaments that I wound up playing. I hope my computer can handle all these tables!
As an aside, I played about 1k hands of PLO at PLO400 today six tabling and won about 2700. It went smoothly and I actually got it in ahead 18 out of 23 times (according to the all in tab of PokerEV), with money still win overall without showdown, so I'm doing something right. However, by far the most interesting revelation I had was the value of pairs when you have wraps. Take the following hand for example:
POKERSTARS GAME #17492844545: OMAHA POT LIMIT ($2/$4) - 2008/05/17 - 12:00:02 (ET)
Table 'Errai' 6-max Seat #2 is the button
Seat 1: d8twithpokr ($401.55 in chips)
Seat 2: MYNMSGREG ($659.25 in chips)
Seat 4: 123sheila123 ($226 in chips)
Seat 6: bananawizard ($362.80 in chips)
TITANIUM 666 will be allowed to play after the button
123sheila123: posts small blind $2
bananawizard: posts big blind $4
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to MYNMSGREG [6d 4c 7s 3d]
d8twithpokr: calls $4
MYNMSGREG: raises $14 to $18
123sheila123: calls $16
bananawizard: folds
d8twithpokr: calls $14
*** FLOP *** [Jd 5h 3s]
123sheila123: checks
d8twithpokr: checks
MYNMSGREG: bets $52
123sheila123: folds
d8twithpokr: raises $160 to $212
MYNMSGREG: raises $429.25 to $641.25 and is all-in
d8twithpokr: calls $171.55 and is all-in
Uncalled bet ($257.70) returned to MYNMSGREG
*** TURN *** [Jd 5h 3s] [7c]
*** RIVER *** [Jd 5h 3s 7c] [Ts]
*** SHOW DOWN ***
d8twithpokr: shows [2d Th Ad 4d] (a pair of Tens)
MYNMSGREG: shows [6d 4c 7s 3d] (a straight, Three to Seven)
When the money went in, I was a 76.8% favorite. Now, If I had 6d 4c 7s Td (making my ten dead), I drop to an underdog 48% to win. If I had 6d 4c 7s Qd I only am 55.7% to win. Big difference!
Here was a fun hand (96% to win in Omaha with all the money going in on the flop, tough to do without dry set over set):
POKERSTARS GAME #17495458561: OMAHA POT LIMIT ($2/$4) - 2008/05/17 - 14:14:27 (ET)

Seat 4: BuzzsawBooda ($512.25 in chips)
Seat 5: MYNMSGREG ($1130.75 in chips)
Seat 6: bakakos ($80 in chips)
Bigdaddydvo: posts small blind $2
BuzzsawBooda: posts big blind $4
bakakos: posts big blind $4
*** HOLE CARDS ***

MYNMSGREG: raises $14 to $18

MYNMSGREG: raises $131.10 to $305.90
Lorelei: calls $52.30 and is all-in
Uncalled bet ($78.80) returned to MYNMSGREG
*** TURN *** [2h 4s Jd] [9d]
*** RIVER *** [2h 4s Jd 9d] [8h]
*** SHOW DOWN ***
MYNMSGREG: shows [As Js Jh Ac] (three of a kind, Jacks)
Lorelei: shows [Ah Jc 7s Tc] (a straight, Seven to Jack)
Lorelei collected $497.20 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot $500.20 | Rake $3

Leggo has been going really well and we have been working tremendously hard to plan out the next couple months at the site. As you can see, today we launched the new coaching section, and I think it looks great and will work even better. I'm really excited and looking forward to some stuff that we have coming up in the next few months, and I will also say try to make it to Vegas if you can because there is certainly a bunch of material around the WSOP.
While I don't want to sit here and talk about all our future plans (you will hear about them soon enough), it would be a tease if I didn't say anything, so I will mention something you might not hear about otherwise. We recently constructed a pretty nice ad for the Bluff WSOP program that is being sold in Vegas this summer, so if you pick up a copy, turn to page 5 (it certainly took some negotiating to get on this page ) and you'll see a nice full page ad for Leggo.
As far as poker, I really have not been playing much at all this month, for a variety of reasons. I feel somewhat like I am in la-la land, which generally happens the month after I put in a bunch of hands. I don't play too often and my heart really isn't into it. Therefore, I have decided to focus on a bigger goal: learning pot limit omaha. The way I see my schedule is this: I'll be around until mid-June when I go to Vegas, and everything will be NLHE-oriented when I am there for sure. Instead of burning out trying to ramp up for that time, or not putting in enough effort and taking time off out of lack of desire to play NLHE, I will focus my energy on learning and becoming successful at PLO. I have 2 super successful coaches in mind and I am going to see if they will take me on as a student (there's some teacher becoming a student line that would be appropriate here and I can't think of it). I will ease my way into the game, and this way still be able to focus on my own coaching and lots of Leggo-work. I feel like it's a pretty good plan.
I also have some movies to catch up on. I wanted to see Forgetting Sarah Marshall and have that on my to-do list. I checked out What Happens in Vegas and thought it was mediocre as expected. I am going to see Ironman today and that is expected to be really good, so I will be back a TR.
Lastly, I am setting a goal to read Tommy Angelo's Elements of Poker. I think I have the propensity to get burnt out from all the things I balance, and this book should help me keep the fire burning and me playing well. I will then most likely read some book about time management; even though I have been doing a pretty good job as of late with all this stuff, there's always room for improvement.
I will close with a phrase that has become infamous within the Leggo coaches. At the end of one of our meetings, Chris (Tickner) was finishing up what he had to say, and then declared at the end, "To the top!" Needless to say, everyone laughed really hard, and now we give him **** for it all the time. Luckily, he's a good guy and takes it well.
TO THE TOP!!!!!!!!!

I actually kind of bounced back and forth whether to do my little HU challenge, or not. Yesterday I actually looked at the 500/1000 Horse game, and it looked really soft to the best of my knowledge. I then wavered and decided that I was going to qualify for the 50k HORSE event (reserving the right to take the money and run), and then I finally decided to just break into the 25/50NL scene full time again.
I cut down on my number of tables to 4 or less, and decided to take a 10 buyin "shot." So far I am down about 8k total, and I think I'm running fairly bad. It's really annoying to run bad when you try to move up.
On the plus, I managed to finagle a 25/50 HU match vs Matusow by helping him start a few FR tables and also immediately re-calling him out when he challenged me to play another game.
I'm going to start watching a bunch of FR videos to get a better sense for that dynamic because there were 3 HORRIBLE players in a FR game I just got out of, and the stars 9m usually have a few straight up bad players as well. I'm also going to be doing a lot of talking with Aaron, and also pry some info out of straate .

April was an interesting month for me. I did a moderate amount of experimentation (number of tables, multitabling software, etc) outside of the physical act of playing hands at the beginning/middle of the month. Then I focused on playing and experimenting with a couple different styles, with decent results. I am satisfied with my results overall:
Of course, I did a ton of coaching as I always do.
This month I think I will focus on HU. I want to feel comfortable playing HU at 25/50 by the end of the month, so we will see what happens. Additionally, there isn't always 6 max action when I play at 9-10 AM. So, it'll be a welcome change of pace. My hand goal is 50k. This will be my last month to fully grind before Vegas. To one on one battles!
