Well here we are, its been a huge year for me poker-wise. I went from being an sng pro to being a mid-high stakes cash game reg, overall i am very happy with the progress i've made and with the amount of effort i have put into my game. One thing that bugs me is that i look at some players from just a few years back, players who were respected and revered by the pro poker community and they are now not even competetive, it scares me since i feel like poker has completed so much of my life and if in 3 years i am struggling to beat 2/4 and am only going to get more an more surpassed by the new breed of players, then it will be such a hugely painful thing, i have invested so much in poker and i consider it my calling, to have to start at the bottom of some other venture seems like such a grind.

But i suppose i can just keep working on my game and see where it takes me. Meanwhile i am doing very well at all levels of NLHE, i am logging alot of hands vs other regs up to 10/20 and some 25/50 and i feel this keeps my game extremely sharp. Logging hands vs other regs is something not alot of players bother doing anymore, its high variance, very stressful and if the opponent in question will give you action, odds are its -ev. However i never feel like its -ev in the long run, it will only make you a better player and make it easier to play other regs if you are preying on weaker players.

Anyway enough rambling, Here are some figures. My month in review is as follows, it was a good one...

i had it a good bit higher but ran pretty awful in a HU match at 50/100 with a decent semi-reg. We had a very aggro 3/4 bet dynamic so i was very happy 4b/calling with AQ here, and he could not have had a better hand for it...

Anyway, i never wrote the follow-up of my 2nd match with isildur, but long story short he came back the next day playing way more in-line and solid, i still managed to take $25K or so off him in a longish session. I haven't seen him since but i'll let you know if i do. Oh and i won my prop-bet to play 120 hours in the month . Best of luck in 2010 people. oldjude.

Funny, my last post was about crazy scandi's, and this week i unwittingly entered into a long 4 tabling match with someone who is rumoured to be the ultimate crazy scandi, isildur1. Apparently ''theitalienstyle'' is isildurs ipoker moniker. I was scanning the biggest losers on ipoker the other day came across theitalienstyle as the number 1 donator.

Then i was sitting there watching Good will hunting for the first time(great movie if you haven't seen it), when theitalienstyle sits at one of my 25/50 tables and requests a multitabling match, i graciously accepted and we got going.

He started out playing very standard, straightforward, aggro. Then i won a couple of buy-ins off him and he starts going nuts. First he asked me to move up to 50/100 and i told him i couldn't take the swings right now. Then he just starts 3betting almost every hand and never folding to a 4b. I picked up on this and started shoving in over his 3bets with any ace, pair, KT+ or QJ+...

It hurt alot but i will play him again if he wants, cos while i wouldn't consider myself better than him, i know that at 25/50 he doesn't care about a few bi's, so its got to be +ev. Its so strange that he is considered to be one of the best poker players on the planet and he can't seem to reel in his degeneracy. Just to clarify i didn't know it was isildur until after the match. Anyway, gl yo.

I got lured back to ipoker a couple of months ago with a nice rb deal and a SN change. I am now herbsuperb87 on there. I used to play sng's there a couple of years ago under ''oldjude'' and you can check my results on sharkscope, i switched to FTP and stars mainly for the variety and because i knew it would be a much better poker education. I am very glad i made this decision.

The regs on ipoker at midstakes seem to be fairly similar to the regs on the US sites. But the high stakes games are hugely populated by fish and bumhunters. There are so many bumhunters on ipoker it is ridiculous. And the regs generally seem to play somewhat weaker and more primitively than the regs on the US sites.

Then i've noticed these strange players, they generally tend to be scandi's who buy in full at high stakes and play super aggro, with a really high 3b and flop c/r, they'll play a short session, quit and not come back.I have come across several players who fit this description, its very strange, they seem to have gotten like half an education at poker, as AeJones said, their upfront aggression is very good and tough to play against but their backdoor aggression is weak, their play is not refined enough to consistently win.

Therefore i think they just come on, sit with the regs, play a very high variance match and hope it works out for them. Its kind of like on a smaller scale what isildur or martonas did, don't get me wrong i am not saying isildur or martons are not good, its just that it seemed like it was inevitable that they would burn out.

I wish these players would put in a long sample against me. But they usually quit after not too long.
One of these players played a couple of sessions against me the other day and i ran into a couple of interesting spots. He ran good against me and was up a good amount at the start, but i finished up good. i especially noticed how poorly he played when we got deep. He was 3betting just as much and not heightening his betsize, it makes a player easy to play against Like this...

Granted he got a bad flop to make a move on, he was doing this alot.

But this spot is interesting to me, should i be calling here? i mean i had seen him make large overbets with big draws and slight overpairs, but i do not know if there are enough weaker draws in his range for me to call here, i ended up folding since i think he was the sort of player that could do this with the nfd here. Which would obv be very bad for me.

So i have a $2,000 bet w another 2+2er that i can play 120 hrs of internet pokers this month. And i have been grinding like a mother bitch. Its good for 2 reasons, 1st it encourages me to safely grind back up my depleted BR and also its good if i win .

Today was the most amount of hands i've played in a day(cash at least) i was grinding for about 9 1/2 hours, mostly 3/6 with some 2/4 and a little 5/10 and 10/20 thrown in. here are a few interesting hands if u guys care to look.

I feel optimistic about this, the damage caused to my br after going bad at 25/50 was pretty awful but i feel like it desensitized me and made me a lot tougher and more sorta mature as a player. So wish me luck and more run-good, and many happy returns yo

Well not quite, however my FTP BR is decimated right now, being on the worst downswing of my life. I feel like i am playing better than i ever have by far, and nothing is going right. I feel like i can't win a race to save my life and maybe its just time to ''take a break'' as they say.

This one guy staalmusa in particular is fleecing me. I think i have a decent edge on him, but he f***ing walks on water, here are a couple of hands between us...

Hand 3 i had my reasons for getting it in otf(basically cos he's a huge monkey and i knew if he had a hand like he had that he just wouldn't fold).

Anyway lucky for him i don't have enough left in my acc. to play him at 5k nl. So i'm going to have to step down and grind some 5/10 or 3/6 or if theres a good 10/20 game running i'll jump in.

I am running $135,000 below ev in as many hands and while its extremely sickening its also a pretty proud feeling to know i'm still winning at a decent rate.

Other hands recently that almost reduced me to tears of frustration were this

Anyway i won't let this blog just turn into me crying over spilled milk, but i did feel like i had to get some of those hands off my chest.

In other news i think i will be heading over to visit my brother in New York in a few weeks hopefully. Ah i love christmas in the USA, those people realllly know how to feed ya. Also i can't get enough of their coffee and bagels. Any recommendations for a good sushi place or great pizza would be appreciated.

Hopefully my next entry will be a little more upbeat, so about the general bleak outlook on this one, the good news is that i don't really feel the pain of losing as much or for as long as i used to, so maybe i'm learning to calm my demons or something .

Oh also some guys wanted me to post the hands from my flipping session, here you go

Well, i've been thinking about doing this for a while now and had some time on my hands so decided to make my first entry. Not sure what i should talk about here so for now i'll just give ya'll a bit of info on how 09 has been going for me so far(in the future i hope to make a long-winded aejones style post about poker-philosophy since i think i can contribute in that area in a way that will interest you guys).

I started 09 by moving into my new apt.(pics to come but waiting on a new camera)its pretty nice, living alone has its pros and cons but overall i definitely prefer it to living with people, i'm a sociable guy but i need a lot of time alone with my thoughts. I started the year playing mtt's, anything from $10 to 1k bi's. Then early in the year i ran well and in one week i won back-to-back $100 re-buys on stars and ftp, followed closely by a 2nd place finish in the sunday 500 on stars for a $100k week.

I had played a bit of cash but was always a get-rich-quick type before this so the grind never appealed to me. However with this hot-streak i decided that this was probably the most i would win in one go for a while so decided that that i had enough of a roll now to play cash despite my donkishness, and it was always obvious to me that cash players were better poker players overall(evident by my less than successful ventures into cash at that time).

I started at 2/4 and put in a low volume of hands until mid-year(25k or so), then i started to play a little 3/6 and 5/10 though i was clearly dead-money at 5/10. But i decided to continue trying and eventually moved up with some success. I like to think i am beating 5/10 and 10/20 at a decent rate now.

So i decided to try to make the switch to HU, which i always failed at, but i feel like every time i've ever tried to beat a new area of poker i've eventually got there, so why not. It started off very nicely, i moved some of my play over to a euro site and found the play way softer than that of stars or ftp, like a good 3/6 reg on ftp i thought would be better than a lot of the 10/20 regs on this site.

Things have been going pretty bad lately however, i have been running a disgusting amount below ev in the last few weeks and it really piled up the last few days, some failed races followed by some desperate bluffs have amounted to a $50K downswong. i don't really want to move down, but if things continue in this vein, it will be necessary.

And this one is the hands i've played on the euro site...

So overall things are going well, but its hard to not be discouraged when you've just lost a lot. I hope to keep this blog updated as often as i can, also if you guys want focus on certain areas, let me know, gl, oldjude.
