A (Gasp!) sucessful hero call
Posted in Poker | View Comments (18)

Played a long session against noluck17 today, as well as some 3handed with kped. It was nice to win a lot, especially since last time we played 40/80 hu noluck took me for 260k or so in 2500 hands. I think he plays pretty well to be honest, he makes up for doing a lot of exploitable things with his raw aggression. The fact that he wasn't afraid to stick it in made me have to tighten up quite a bit in spots I like to play back. Anyways, I'll post a couple cool hands and I'll also leave one in the high stakes forum since I was really confused in the hand.

Full Tilt, $40/$80 NL Hold'em Cash Game, 3 Players

SB: $31,137.25
BB: $13,498.75
Hero (BTN): $16,879

Pre-Flop: Q J dealt to Hero (BTN)
Hero raises to $240, SB raises to $880, BB folds, Hero calls $640

Flop: ($1,840) 7 J 2 (2 Players)
SB bets $1,280, Hero calls $1,280

Turn: ($4,400) 3 (2 Players)
SB checks, Hero bets $3,122, SB raises to $28,977.25 and is All-In, Hero calls $11,597 and is All-In

River: ($33,838) 8 (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

Results: $33,838 Pot
SB showed Q Q and WON $48,095.25 (+$31,256.25 NET)
Hero showed Q J and LOST (-$16,879 NET)

This is one of those spots where I'm not happy to get it in but I'm going to have to take my lumps with a hand this good. Checking this class of hands back makes my turn strategy too polarized imo.

Hero call pays off for once! Really tough for him to have a nut hand (5+) here given his preflop frequencies and I think very unlikely for him to have a hand like QJ here, although that would be the superown triple-range-merge or whatever. (btw, I've tried checkraising marginal made hands in spots like this against 'tough' regs where my range looks incredibly weak- doesn't work, they just slowplay and own me and I feel like an FPS-y idiot). Also, I think it's likely he thinks he can represent a 5 more credibly than he actually can= cawl.

Poker has been getting better lately, running pretty well over the past month or so. Hopefully I'll see some better results in the 2-7nl td games and the 2-7nl single draw games. Maybe I'll even win in plo!?!? Ok, ok, that's pretty farfetched I admit. I bought learnedfromtv's book though, so perhaps pouring over the incredible amount of data he has gathered will get me a bit more comfortable. Later guys, gl.

Ben

Seriously, do you have any idea how bad you play especially vs a valuebetor that good and how good you run?
Hand 1 is a bet/fold turn 200bbs he is not going to bluff/check shove worse vs a station like you there.
Hand 2 that's what you sometimes get for playing small sc you get it in owned or flipping, guess not every day you hit straights into Negreanu's top set and still fear AK.
Hand 3 you've described it perfectly good value vs the station
Hand 4 it's kind off a cooler and very standard vs you, lethal with the nuts as always.

in my humblest opinion I think QJ is a bet/call if you bet it.
Awesome blog Ben.

How is that? Are you a female prostitute?

@everyone please note that most of these plays are close to 200bbs deep, that's why I think they are bad, 100bbs would be a different story.

Well that's all I know, plus 10BB/100 bumhunting HU, not sure who has knowledge at 40/80 hu from the posters.
I'm trying to post some opinions other than "awesome blog" , "thanks for this", I'm starting to question the edge that hero has vs 40/80 hu villains with his marginal plays(that I call bad you call awesome), I would try to find bigger edges, not sure about hero's overall strategy... winning 1.5BBs on a career peak running hot isn't that impressive, but at least he fights not like other high stakes coaches who don't even play the game on the major rooms.

ultras, you must have forgot to look at his Full Tilt PTR....5BB/100 playing anybody and everybody. Not that PTR is accurate anyway.

1) I never said his plays were awesome, in fact I will admit that I have no idea wtf goes through the head of Sauce at times. I do know that you can't win at 40/80 HU by playing 20/16 and only playing the top of our range.
2) Winning at 1.5BBs at anything 5/10+ is amazing, wish I could do it
3) He has millions in winnings, you and I don't. Results speak for themselves

I think that`s ok, it adds interesting discussions.

But first: This is not a video thread, it`s not made really for strategy discussion

And second: If you do wanna create a strategy discussion (which I personaly think is fine), there is no need to ofend the OP. You can say all the things you said in a way that really create a good discussion (if thats your real intension, which i think its not), and not just "HU 4 rollz" posts.
