How to be Awesome in 3 steps...
Posted in Poker | View Comments (12)

warning: as far as i know there is no empirical evidence to suggest this results in you becoming awesome

Step 1) Try and be as reality based as you can.

It is suprisingly hard to actually see reality as it really is, and see yourself as you really are (probably is actually impossible). Human's view of reality is continually clouded by cognitive biases (that probably did have benefits for our evolutionary progress, or were at least harmless, but now are detremental). It is worth trying to highlight these biases when you experience them yourself, or see others falling for them. Hopefully with enough enforcement you will stop falling for them so easily and thus become more intune with reality. There is a great stub on wikipedia that lists a tonnes of them

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_biases

Note: i also find it really fascinating

Step 2) Never Lie

I've been doing this actively for quite a few months now as mentioned on my blog before. I probably still do some lying that is so second nature i don't even notice, but i haven't actively lied for the whole period. I was inspired to do this by reading this Sam Harris essay

http://www.samharris.org/lying

While there are benefits to this without step 3, it is step 3 that really makes this an effective way of becoming awesome

Step 3) Big yourself up

Not sure exactly how to say this, but actively announce what your plans/goals are in life, don't hedge your bets or set easily attainable goals. Set yourself up as the perfect person.

What this system will do will set you up to fail continually, and hopefully your ego will ensure you don't fail too pathetically, as you aren't allowed to lie you might actually do what you are supposed to do instead of not doing it, and then lying about it. You set yourself up as the perfect person, who can do no wrong, and then try and live up to the image you created, whilst not being allowed to lie. Hopefully you will eventually become that person.

Lets all try it out and see what happens guys!

1 and 2 aren't that hard imo. Step 3 is hard.

My first goal is to big myself up. I will accomplish this within the next 7 days. I am awesome.

thanks

1 is whatever, everyones perception of reality depends completely on their intelligence level to begin with
2 is well .. people who need to lie are living their lives wrong
3 - what does one have to gain from being "perfect" ? (this is perhaps too far fetched and will end up with "what is the purpose of all this" anyway), i guess a simple example would be if you push yourself to wake up an hour earlier every day to go for a jog vs sleeping that hour and being "lazy", lets assume for the sake of simplified argument that by waking up earlier and going for a jog will increase the length of your life by x amount, but why is that even important if at the age of say 90 you are kind of a vegetable anyway ?
and yeah there are other reasons like staying in shape etc but if you take those out (because people who care about what they look like will look alright anyway and people who dont will look like shit and die sooner regardless)

this got long winded and fuzzy but i guess my question is, if you choose to follow all of these 3 steps, what will actually change in terms of your life quality/well-being other than you having "completed your goal and thus earning the right to feel good about it" ?

I read that lying essay and though interesting, just seems to be the writer using single examples in his life of when telling the truth worked out well and lying turned out bad. Mostly a load of tosh imo.

i think you guys are underestimating how hard it is to see reality how it really is.

@ desire - well i find your view a little depressing, i think people can change how accurate their perception of reality is. i thnk 99% of people lie on a regular basis even if they are living their lives 'right' in most peoples eyes.

this one to 3: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/lar...at_career.html

First one was eye opening for me. Third one was inspirational. Both were must see videos for me.

what do you mean by "99% of people lie on a regular basis even if they are living their lives right" ?
or well, to be honest i suppose i would agree with that statement but i also think that 99% of people on this planet are completely fucking stupid in one way or another, and people who i surround myself with (id hope and if im wrong they will get eaten out of that circle real fast) are in the 1% based on my perception of "right"

and fwiw i dont mean that im like the ultimate boss of perfection or anything, but just that if you have people who you deal with on a day to day basis who are habitual lyers (doesnt really matter if its small or big things) then chances are u are probably on a path to some realy dark place

including white lies, any time you are deceptive outside of a game situation (poker)

an example of a common lie i used to tell. when i agree to do some activity like doing a workout or something, and don't feel like it on the day, i might say i'm not feeling well or something, now i have to basically do the workout, or admit to my friend that i'm basically being lazy and can't be bothered to do the activity.

or if i don't grind for a day, when my gf gets back from work and asks me what i did today, in the past i could easily pretend i played a few hours so she wouldn't think i'm a lazy layabout, but now i have to either do the work, or just tell her i was lazy.

i'm not saying that i'm lying about anything super important or anything, or that most people do, but all those tiny lies allow people to live slightly easier lives, but lives where shit doesn't get done

Plus I find that for myself my quality of life is much better when I am 100% honest with myself.

Numbers 1 and 3 contradict each other

The reality is none of us are perfect. We all have are flaws and imperfections. Some more so than others. We can't control how we look, what parents we were born to, or our general level of intelligence. What we can do is try to improve the areas of our life that we can control.

The quest to become a "perfect person" is futile. I think its more important to be realistic with yourself and striving to be the best "you" that you can be

the goal is not to become perfect, but to attempt it. as i said, you will fail, but still do better than most people

Obviously... I'm contending its more important to be realistic with yourself than to have illusions of grandeur. Not all of us are set out to be astrophysicists.
