Poker Etiquette?
Posted in Poker | View Comments (29)

Hey guys, just wondering what you think of poker etiquette?

When you have the nuts and someone shoves into you, what do you think about slow-rolling? rude table talk? I'll respond to you guys in the comment section or in another blog post, but I think it's a pretty interesting concept where a lot of things I think about come into play.

I'll say that all of those things are options we all have and that they have value; otherwise, I want to leave the floor open for discussion in the comments section here.

Hope you're all well

-Reid

you need a good reason for slowrolling, if you do it for no reason other than to tilt a guy and you dont feel bad afterwords youre a douche. rude table talk is ok imo

if the guys known to be a dick its fair game to slow roll. I accidentally slowrolled a fish hu because i had a lot of tables up and he insta spewed off 3 stacks so it might be a good strategy vs. them but it is a dick thing to do a guess.

Just don't do it with cards to come. Time banking and calling with aces preflop will yank on the doom switch, this I promise you.

what pokersavant2009 said. slowrolling is the lifenuts when you have the nuts and are already at the river, it seems like 80/20 PF equity turns into 20/80 equity when slowrolling the PF AI call.. :-/

I will never forget how I got slowrolled by a guy with quads. I had the straight flush. Best.timing.ever.

I think slowrolling is a bad thing, i pretty much never do it except against pro shortstackers. I can understand to do it against a reg you really hate, but he's just gonna return the favor and it makes you look like a douche. Unless the entire table is annoyed.

If you intentionally slowroll someone you're a dick. I can't imagine a situation where someone with class would do it.

Everytime I try to slowroll someone either the power goes off or the internet connection dies so I hate doing it! I snap it while my internet works!

i personally do not see how a slowroll online can be that tilting, i dun give a damn if someone slowrolled me, i actually find it hilarious that ppl actually get some sorta enjoyment out of it
i think it's very bad to do in live though, especially tanking for like 10min or something, may result in some unpleasant consequences, ie losing ur teeth
as far as rude table talk, i think it's uncalled for most of the time
on the other hand, if you r playing with ur friends i think it is mandatory to slowroll + trash talk, ALWAYS!

fish need to have fun at the tbale, coz they have a hobby thats costs them x BB/100 hands. those really add up when they play higher stakes too. usually its quite the significant amount of money. do u like to spend money somehwere where u dont feel comfortable? like, in a bar or somewhere and just everyone is rude to you even though they enjoy your business? you dont. dont create situations where fish are going to think twice about coming back.
if there is rude tbale talk, i try to calm situations and get rid of it. haters gonna hate. i hate regs berating fish, telling them how much they are down on ptr, or how bad of move that all in on the turn was. either fish are qutting the table, or try to become better. we dont want either option.
slowrolling regs is just uncalled for and there is just nothing to gain other than bad karma and waste of timebanks. i do however, balance my checking and calling clicktells. sometimes i just pretend to have a decision. but thats completly different from slowrolling someone.

slowrolling people who have berated you is fair game. I've only slowrolled a few times in my life, one of them was completely douchy and unnecessary and I've also been slowrolled a lot. The funny thing is it's usually pretty obvious when you are being slowrolled, so it doesn't tilt me tbh

Most people don't merge there slowrolling range. I had a great one live last night against a friend I'll talk about that was well merged.

I want to say that, as I expected, almost everyone says it's ok if X has happened already, which has to be the most hypocritical way to think about morality ever and only promotes more slowrolling, which the guys who say this apparently hate. The difference between online and live is interesting as far as the general etiquette and I think live players are more strict about this because they are actually around each other to hold each other morally accountable. Thoughts?

i just think people dont tend to slowroll live because they're afraid they might get beat up or threatened/verbally abused. In my oppinion people dont slowroll as much live just because they are better people and have more kindness/sympathy when they stack someone instead of rubbing it in with a slowroll. but more of what i previously stated.

"Most people don't merge there slowrolling range."

lol i talked to craig about this a while ago, but i really enjoy merge rolling, i.e. when someone shoves 15bbs bvb in an mtt, i sometimes tank w/ ATs or 88 to keep my slow rolling range pretty wide.

I've slowrolled shootaa on a multitude of ocassions (live and online) and he pretends to laugh it off. In reality it cuts him deep (See this blog post). With that background in mind...I find using misdirection in announcing your hands to be the more effective strategy. This applies easiest in omaha where you announce your two irrelevant cards first then do an 'ohh wait, i didn't notice i also had the flush/boat/etc.' In hold 'em refer to your sets as having a pair...in your hand.

interesting spot i was involved in. i had the nuts on the river and right to see villains hand 1st(live casino poker)so i wasnt slowrolling wanted to see his hand. rest of the table had a go at me sayin i was slowrolling cause i could beat everything. they was sayin it didnt matter what he had.
very grey area but slowrolling is going to be around as long as poker so ide get used to it.

I don't care if I am beeing slowroled and I can't imagine myself intentionally slowrolling ever. As far as tabletalk goes im a big fan of entertaining the fish ... there are some fishes who are really nice at the table giving comments like "nh" and just enjoying the game. It tilts the hell out of me if some reg insults these guys. On the other hand there are fishes who love to talk trash. Theses guys can take some bullshit.

How is that not a slowroll? You have to show your hand to win the pot, which you will be so just show your hand and insist on seeing his...

differs from casion to casino in leeds. if i showdown nuts i cant see his hand in some casinos. he has right to not reveal. the villain had done some strange stuff and i was like im seeing his hand before he mucks it.

i dont go out my way to slowroll but there isnt the luxury of finding out his holding if i show the nuts down 1st.
i dont think it really matters either way because it seams to be a accepted part of the game these days tbh(its not liked but people do it).
i had a guy make me count my stack down when he easy covered me last week. he had to make sure he was getting the right price with his quads
