Went to Commerce with 20k and left with a whole lot more First time playing live cash games in almost a year. Only one hand jumped out at me from the night: won a 900bb pot with middle set versus TPGK (it was only a 3B pot preflop!!!). Too bad these live guys don't play online.
In other news, I have forsaken SNE (wish there was a way to change the blog title); I dropped 10k in the last 10 days of August (all at 400NL) playing when I was exhausted just so I could log hands. So the next Leggo group will be starting in a little; I have already told Matt and he got the wheels moving.
I played a session today and I was actually excited!! I only wanted to play for 2 hours, but the next thing I knew, 7 hours had passed. This is the way it should be. Just play when I want to and the rest will take care of itself. Having no choice about playing kind of takes the joy out of poker; I'm pretty sure I lost money today, but I was having fun. Hopefully, I'll be in the mood to grind tomorrow. That's all I got for now; it's the 3rd day of the month and it's already my best month ever.
Reid just announced that the book will be released soon (Sept. 15th to be exact, weeeeeeeeee) so I figured I would do the review now before it was released.
First off.... this book WILL NOT tell you what you do in a spot. Example: you CB A5hh on 239ddh (1 heart) and an aggro reg raises your CB. Reid WILL NOT tell you what you do here; so what are we paying 2500 for then? He explains what you SHOULD be thinking about, what factors to analyze, etc. For a lot of lazy people, this will be a huge turnoff. For me, this is about 10x better than the norm. Granted, I have only read the flop chapter, but what Reid wrote was pretty amazing and I can just tell that he is setting everything up for the turn and river section (lets be honest, flop is pretty bland; the other streets make everything a little more interesting)
I'll give an excerpt from the chapter to give you an idea (if it's not ok Reid, just let me know and I'll delete it). You will have no idea what he is talking about since you really have to read the previous parts in the Chapter to full understand, but it should give you a good idea of what you are in for:
Question #7: Do we have showdown value with our float?
Let's say that the cutoff raises and we call with A•Q• on the button. The flop is JT•4. And we call our opponent's continuation bet hoping for a turn diamond, ace, king, or queen. We also intend to continue on some other turns that miss our opponent's semi-bluffing range because we have good equity against a lot of his turn betting range, hands like J9. Because we are ahead of most of our opponent's semi-bluffing range, we deduce that we have some showdown value with our hand.
The answer to this is also a function of how likely your opponent is to check the turn and/or river in order to induce bluffs from you when your range has a lot of draws in it. If he checks the turn, he’ll likely be checking a blank river to induce a bluff with his weaker made hands. When considering a bluff with A•Q• when checked to on the turn or on the river, you’re getting the worst of both worlds as it’s unlikely you fold out anything better by betting as a bluff and the fact that you’ll have the best hand often enough in order to show down profitably makes inducing a bluff on the river the likely best play. Because your opponent is expecting you to bet air like 9•7•, K•Q, and 98, if he checks the river with a weak made hand, then he will almost always be calling your bet. If he is checking the river, it's with a plan to either call or to fold and because we beat all of our opponent's failed turn bluffs, we should just take the showdown with our A•Q•
LOL, you probably have no clue what is going on and rightfully so since the previous stuff written in the chapter builds up to it, but as you can see, Reid goes over what YOU SHOULD BE ANALYZING in this spot and does so in a very clear and easy to understand manner. This is actually a pretty important concept and a major leak that people don't know they have (Fuck you Reid for pointing it out).
I am very excited about his book and really torn about writing a review about it. On one hand, I have put a ton of work in my game to improve and I don't want the guys I play against to read this book and catch up to me. On the other hand, I know how hard Reid has worked on this book and he basically poured his heart out on the pages written; it wouldn't be fair considering how much he has helped my game to not give an honest review (if the book sucked, I just wouldn't have written a review). Yes, I have only read one chapter, but I know that the rest will be amazing. How? He is building your thought process on the flop to build your thought process on later streets. I can't tell you how amazing that is.... and I can't explain how HARD this is. I think I know why it took so long for him to write the book.
Now on to the price.... $2,500 LOL. I tried to get Reid to raise the price, but it didn't work. This is the easiest buy in the world for me and I told him so. He could exploit guys like me, guys where the price is inelastic to whether or not we will buy. If he said 4k, I still would snap buy it. It's an investment in my poker future and a very small price for me to pay. If it will bust your roll, you probably shouldn't get it. But if you can afford it, then it's probably in your best interest to pick it up. I didn't try harder to get him to raise the price because I know that the regs I play with who need the book the most probably won't even buy it at 2,500; that is why they are who they are. If you have a decent bankroll at 200NL, you would be doing your business a disservice if you didn't get it. This is obviously a personal choice since the price point is relative, but at some point you have to decide if you are going to commit yourself to this poker thing.
With all that being said, the book isn't a magical pill (and I don't think Reid intended it to be). You will have to put in the work. No 2 spots are the same in this game; I believe this book will teach you how to think about each individual spot, but the rest is ultimately up to you. If you aren't noting how a villan reacts to a raise on a dry flop (so you can start figuring out his tendancies), then the thought process you gain from the book is irrelevant. Just reading the book won't make you a crusher. However, I truly believe it will give you the thought process necessary to BECOME a crusher if you put in the work.
This blog post might seem like a huge infomercial, but it's my honest opinion. I get nothing by giving a good review (no discounts, etc..); it actually hurts me since it might encourage others to get it. I think Reid produced an amazing piece of poker literature (I could be wrong though since I have only seen one chapter) and not giving my honest opinion would be insulting all the effort he put into it. The games get harder everyday and I put in a ton of work to stay ahead of the curve. This book will obviously make the games even harder, but I know that I will outwork other players and get more from the book then they will. I'm not durrrrr; poker isn't easy for me, I'm a testament to what good old fashioned hard work can accomplish (anyone that knows me can attest to how much work I put in). I don't want shortcuts, I want something that will build my poker knowledge and schema. I believe this book will do that for me and that is the only reason for this blog post.
That's all I have for now. The book will out on September 15th and I think this makes my decision regarding Supernova Elite a lot easier.... Until next time, when life gives you lemons ask for salt and tequila.
It has been a pretty rough month overall. Not money wise, but pretty much in every other way. I started the month off really focused and then life got in the way; I already spoke about it in my last blog post so point beating a dead horse (very weird saying). I have been getting roughly 3 hours of sleep a night and fighting LA rush hour traffic for 5 hours a day. It shouldn't really be a big surprise that my play has been adversely affected.
I played 107,000 hands this month and made $22,533.18. I am by no means complaining about making over 22k, that's a ton of money in the real world (but only 12k is from actual play, thank you milestone bonus). I'm basically complaining about poker in general. The past 2 weeks, I have played long sessions half asleep for SuperNova Elite. I have closed the gap and currently have over 630,000 vpp, but I'm starting to think it's not worth it. To be honest, I don't want to play right now. I'm exhausted and grouchy from waking up so damn early and this routine will last until September 15th; I don't know if I can take 15 more days of this. The best thing for me is to just take the next 15 days off from the grind and 6 table when I feel like it. The problem is that I'm right there and throwing away 30k seems foolish to me. All I know is that poker feels like a job right now and that is pretty sad.
Enough of the emo stuff.... Reid (shootaa) sent me a chapter of his upcoming book to preview and it was pretty sick. I'll be making a more thorough review later in the month, but I am VERY excited to get my hands on the whole thing. I am honestly a little worried about this info getting out to the masses, but I guess that is the nature of the game. Players adapt and you either progress faster or get left behind.
That's all I have for now. I can barely keep my eyes open. Sorry for being such a little bitch; I know I am very lucky to be making this kind of money playing a game. These past 2 weeks have been the only time I can remember ever forcing myself to play. I usually play a lot because I want to; being exhausted isn't very conducive to motivation and I guess that is what I am bitching about. FML.
It took me a long time to get this post done, but here it is, Part 1 of 2.... I use a ton of software while I play and with it comes an acclimation period; you have to get used to the software. A quick little rant before I start... I just started using a new script for PokerStars. It does a bunch of things and one of them is using the buttons on the left side of my mouse to fold/check... here are some interesting results while I got used to the button (I tend to randomly click this button while I play);
Leading a set and folding to a raise isn't very profitable or intentional; I'm just going to tell myself that he had KK:
Pre-Flop: 7 7 dealt to Hero (SB)
UTG folds, CO raises to $18, BTN folds, Hero calls $15, BB calls $12
Flop: ($54) K 8 7 (3 Players)
Hero bets $39, BB folds, CO raises to $120, Hero folds
Results: $132 Pot ($2 Rake) CO showed and WON $130 (+$73 NET)
Floated villan's check raise and turn bet with the intention of bluffing a lot of rivers when checked to. I get the PERFECT card and I check back. Villan must have been thinking WTF?? This misclick put me on tilt pretty bad since everything worked out perfectly and my dumb thumb accidentally clicked the "check" hotkey:
I have always been a huge HEM fan... they revolutionized the poker tracking industry. As such, I never gave PT3 a real shot besides their initial beta release. I just bought PT3 and have been using both. With PT3, you can make ANY stat you want for your HUD or popup. The learning curve is high, but well worth it.Once I figured out the structure of the coding, it was pretty easy (though learning the structure was REALLY hard). If you want to know how often someone folds to a 3B UTG vs CO, make the stat. Want to know how often someone check/raises turn instead of double barreling in a 3B pot, make a stat for that... the possibilities are limitless and I basically have the PERFECT HUD now. I use HEM for the "# of table HUD stat" and their note system (PT3 notes suck) and PT3 for the rest of my HUD.
Auto Color
Lazy man's way to identify players in your database. I have it setup for one filter: 40 vpip+ marks them Green on Stars. It goes through your database and finds everyone that meets your criteria and changes the players color in the notes file. When you click on a table it will show a list of players seated, if they are green they are a fish and you jump on. You can set it up to use multiple colors (reg, tagfish, fish, etc)..... http://www.clicktilt.com/products/auto-color/
I set up slots where I want tables to go and when I open a table, it automatically goes there; also, moving tables to the next slot is easy (just drag it a little and it will move). Makes moving tables VERY easy. There is a learning curve, but the developer is very active in the 2+2 thread (in the Software forum under the Free Software sub-forum). Give it a try, it will change the way you play poker.
That is the end of Part 1, I'll finish up the rest of the software I use later in the month. I'm EXHAUSTED right now. My girlfriend got a new job at a Hollywood design firm and I have to drive her there at 8 in the morning and pick her up at 6 at night. It takes me over 5 hours everyday for both trips. Life isn't fun right now....She can't get her driver's license until her work visa is finalized and that won't be until the middle of September... my volume and level of play has gone to shit since I am working on 2-3 hours of sleep a night. FML.
Damn, where does the time go? I have been in grind mode since coming back from Vegas and I'm loving it. I need to average 3311 vpp/day to make SNE by the end of the year and it ain't no thing. I'm currently at:
I have made a big dent on the gap for SNE this month and hopefully I won't get distracted this month. I didn't hit the 500k milestone bonus, but it's fine. It will help pad my numbers for August. I ended up playing 99,350 hands and won $31,805.98 at the tables and $36,120.82 after all the goodies. I can see the finish line for SNE and it's motivating me more than ever to play If you stop and think about it, SNE isn't that hard.... I have taken 59 days off from poker this year (that is a shit ton) and still right there. If I just played everyday, it would only take 4 and a half hours of playing. Just some food for thought for those that are considering going for it in 2011.
There are a ton of things that I wanted to talk about, but I'm just swamped right now... Sometime this month I will go over all the software I use (gotten a ton of PM about this), the new poker study group I'm in, and a general prose on motivation (gotten a ton of PM about that too). Also, I still don't know when I'm going to start the next Leggo group (I haven't even talked to Matt about it yet); I'm in the grind zone and can't really think about it. For those that want to be in it, just be active in the Leggo forums. I'm out for now so stay tuned until next time.
There has long been a rumor of a certain curse that exists.... if you post in your blog bragging about running hot, YOU WILL GET SHIT ON. What I have learned over the past few days is: NEVER BRAG ABOUT RUNNING HOT. I have never posted an EV graph because they are usually very misleading, but I will do it this time. I can't even count how many times I have gotten aipf with AA vs AK and lost in the past few days. On the flip side, I can't remember how many times I have gotten AK aipf and ran into AA (I obviously lose though). Running bad in every way possible, getting sucked out on and getting coolered. This could be a double whammy curse since I cashed out 25k right before my run hot blog post. So basically, I'm f*cked.
Meh, that's poker though I guess. Not fun, but it's the profession I have chosen. We all live and learn. Maybe this blog post will negate my run hot brag and things will get back to normal. That's all I got for now, until next time, FML. Kind of makes me want to make re-re-consider giving up my hourly rate to do group coaching for profit, LOL.
Sorry for being a flake, but I have re-decided to not do group coaching for profit. The amount of time required is staggering and to be honest, the people that I can help the most probably don't have the money. I'm honestly flattered that there was so much interest, but I would be so invested into the members of the group that my grinding would be seriously affected. I have had a few people send me money on Stars and I will refund it after the blog post and will contact them individually. I want to coach to help people, but I can't do it at the expense of my bottom line.
With that being said, I will be doing a Round 2 of Leggo group coaching (the free one). I don't know when I'm starting since I'm in grind mode right now, but I'll contact Matt (Probability) in the near future and try to get things going. The criteria before was basically members of Leggo who are very active in the community and I see no reason to change that. So if you are interested, start getting involved.
That's all I got for now. Once again, I am very sorry about canceling group coaching. I'll try to make it up to the guys who already paid for being a cock tease.
June can only be described in one word: LAZY. I took half the month off for my brother's wedding and my Vegas trip. SNE is becoming more and more of a pipedream. I need to average 3,200 vpp/day for the rest of the year to get to SNE. I ended up making $9,600 at the tables and $13,400 after all the PokerStars goodies (thank God for the 400k milestone bonus). I ended up playing only 40k hands and I feel pretty dirty putting in such small volume.
This month has been very weird. I have been grinding non-stop since I got back and took yesterday off. I have been watching Lost and can't stop. I just finished the first episode of Season 4 and I feel like a crackhead. I think I am playing ok this month, but Lord I am running like God!. I checked yesterday and I'm up just under 14k this month and hope to keep the run good going.
Finally, I have decided to do some group coaching......
Here are my results on the year at 400NL on Stars:
I cleared my database after I stopped playing on Full Tilt so those results aren't shown (I ran like God on that site). Played a little over 90,000 hands there and won at 4.1 ptBB/100. I suck at math, but over 300,000 hands this year I have won at probably 3.6 ptBB/100 at 400NL. I have also played around 250,000 hands this year at 200NL and won at 3.1 ptBB/100 (deleted my 200NL database when I stopped playing the limit).
Here is how it will work:
- 5 sessions, each lasting 2 hours. Each group will have 5 members.
- The first hour will be a PowerPoint and the second will be a sweat of a group member's recorded video.
- Each member will be REQUIRED to sweat another member each week.
- The PowerPoint will be based on the need of the group as a whole. Each member will send me a picture of their positional stats in HoldEmManager so I can see glaring preflop leaks (would prefer to focus on postflop and not do preflop since it's pretty basic but we will see)
- The cost of the group package is $1,200 per person and we will be starting 2 weeks after groups are finalized (I need time to make the PowerPoints)
- You will have access to my private coaching forum on Leggo and I will basically be available on Skype whenever if you have questions. If I'm playing and you want to sweat me that's fine too.
This group coaching is targeted towards 100NL players who can't break through and 200NL players who are currently struggling at the limit. One huge caveat, if you play on Stars at 400NL or 600NL even occasionally to chase a fish, you can't be in the group.
I want to have 2 groups and they will both be on the held on the same day. It is my hope that the 2 groups will talk to each other and basically act like 1 group. Each group will have differing powerpoints depending on each one's needs so you basically get 2 group coaching sessions. The more you talk poker with other people, the better you will get. Having 9 new people to talk poker with, 9 differing thoughts on lines, etc will accelerate your growth.
Like I said earlier, we will start after the 2 groups are finalized and payments received. So if you also have a friend that wants to join, the sooner we fill up the sooner we begin. If you are interested, send me a PM along with a screenshot of your positional stats from HEM (In the report section of HEM go to the dropdown menu under "Select Report Name From List" and select "Position"). Your spot will be locked up when I receive the money on PokerStars; it's basically first come, first serve.
That's all I got for today. I'm exhausted from a 22 hour Lost netflix marathon.
I got back from Vegas a few days ago, but got REALLY sick literally the moment I got home. I ended up being in Vegas for 5 days and had a pretty amazing time (completely different from my other Vegas trips).
I woke up really early on Tuesday and headed out the door at 1 PM for the drive to Vegas. I was in such a rush that I didn't really have a chance to eat all day. I arrived at Trump around 4:30, checked in, and headed to the Leggo Party. TBH, I was pretty nervous about going. Why? Well, I didn't really know anyone and I was going by myself I tried as hard as I could to get friends to come with me, but with the party being on a Tuesday, no dice. It was probably best this way; if I went with friends, I probably wouldn't have met as many people.
First off, a big shout out to Vitas, Matt, and Aaron. I was nervous as hell, but they made me feel comfortable within 2 minutes. Just really good guys and all do a great job at socializing. After meeting them, the night was a blur: (1) I hadn't eaten all day; (2) the drinks were on Leggo. I spoke with Oakton55 for a long time (we were in shoota's group coaching) and after that, all is lost. I know I hung out a long time with Vitas entourage of ladies, but I have no clue what we talked about. Literally the last thing I remember is Matt and toocrispy dragging me out of the bathroom. Apparently, I took refuge in a stall and people needed to take a dump.
Oh, yeah.... I met Dan (Irishman07) and his wife. He was my first real coach and we started working when I lived in San Francisco. During every coaching session (basically anytime I'm on the computer) my cat, Muggle, would hog up my desk to get my attention. I tell this story because Irishwife07 greeted me as Muggle!! It's been a long time since our sessions and she still remembers that LOL (btw, both are really cool people). So for Irishwife07, I have compiled a few pictures of Muggle:
The next day consisted of me waking up still drunk (apparently I drove to the hotel). I had scheduled a bunch of viewings with a realtor, but that wasn't happening. Instead, my brother took me to lunch and we hung out for a few hours. I ended up loafing around Rio for the rest of the day and randomly decided to play the 1k event (I have never played a tourney before). That night I headed to Matt's place and witnessed firsthand the madness of lostinthesaus' prop bet. I arrived around 10:00 and he had completed over 3,000 pushups, finished all his shots, and just needed to punch out the final pushups along with a beer an hour to win.... I have to say that achieving that much is impressive; I'm sure he would have got a lot of action on 3k pushups. I won't get into how the bet ended since it's none of my business, but regardless of the outcome, he did a sick job.
FIRST WSOP EVENT
I have no idea how to play tournaments... I wrote down a few hands that I had trouble with, but whatever. The only hand I will mention is the very first hand of the tournament.... I'm in the BB w KK and an older fellow raises the button and calls my 3B. I bet half pot on Q92r and he calls. I half pot a blank 4 turn and he shoves.
100bb deep and folding KK in a 3B pot is not something I do, but it was the first hand of my first WSOP tournament. TBH, older live pros are nits and the fold was probably a lot easier than I made it out to be. Just hard to fold an overpair when half my stack is in the pot. Whatever.
I ended up making Day 2 with a 26k stack (34bb). I suck at tournaments, but honestly the FIELD WAS SO SOFT. I just assumed that people who spend 1k on a tournament know what they are doing... I WAS WRONG. I didn't get 3B once all day and I only 3B twice (both times I had KK); much different than my normal online games. Anyways, I played pretty good on day 2. I built my stack to 69k at the 600-1200 limit and thought I was going to make a run; the chip leader (also at my table) had 170k. Well............ I got AKs aipf versus JJ and lost. Winning the flip would have put me #3 in the chips with 225 left. It didn't really hit me until I was driving to Chewy's place after the tournament. During the hand, the villan was going crazy.... "Hold dealer, ONE TIME, etc." I just sat in the chair and was pretty indifferent to the hand; I didn't really care if I won the hand since it was only 1k; it wasn't until I started thinking more that I realized that I loss a shot at 600k. C'est la vie.
After busting from the tourney, I drove to Chewy's to watch Lesnar vs Carwin. I was rooting for Lesnar, but understood the power of Carwin's fist. So in order to hedge my life EV with financial EV, I bet 100 with Chewy that Carwin would win. Oh yeah, if you haven't seen the fight, watch it. Carwin dropped Lesnar and beat on him for the entire first round. I sat there in shock while watching.... Lesnar showed he is a true fighter. He got rocked by the hardest puncher in MMA and took everything he had for a round and survived. Not only did he survive, but he submitted Carwin in the 2nd Round!!!!! I have never been more happy to lose $100.
I left Chewy's at around 10:30 and started my drive home. I didn't mention it earlier, but I got pulled over while in Vegas and got nailed with 4 tickets; apparently my registration is all screwed up. On the drive home, I got pulled over again! I showed the cop my tickets from Vegas and let me off with a fix-it ticket. I'm not looking foward to a day at the DMV. I got home around 1:30 in the morning and have been sick in bed ever since.
A great trip and my lame trip report doesn't do it justice. There are a bunch of other things that happened, but I'm too tired to think. I have been grinding ever since I got home and will continue to do so.... That's all I got for now.
Haven't blogged in awhile (have no idea if anyone even reads this); just been busy with real life stuff...
Supernova Elite:
Not doing too hot on this front Volume is diminishing steadily. It's not really a lack of motivation, just can't get enough tables. I'm falling further and further behind pace with no hope of significant volume in the near future. Games don't run on higher stakes and when they do, the wait list is enormous. I'm not a person who can mix limits... what ends up happening is that all my attention is focused on the higher limit and I just donate at the lower limits. My results over a huge sample of mixing limits confirms this. So basically I'm either playing 1000NL or 400NL. I can stay at 400NL for the rest of the year and make SNE, but the problem is that I don't want to get complacent; I don't want 400NL to become the next 200NL.... easy money and I end up staying there instead of challenging myself.
Poker:
Not getting much volume in I have played 32k hands this month and up just under 6k. I dug a huge hole for myself at the start at 400NL while mixing in 1000NL games. I think I was down something like 23 buyins at one point at 400NL, I'm down $200 now so nice recovery. I'm just not going to mix limits anymore. I deviated from my plan because I wanted to get volume in... I won't do that again.
Life:
Went to brother's wedding last week; was pretty cool. My brother is one of the most emotionally detached humans alive (I'm very similar); that is just the way we grew up. A lot of his friends who have never met me kept commenting how we are like clones with respects to our personalities and mannerisms. Anyway, while he was saying his vows he starts crying! I have never seen him cry.... as a side note, I'm the same way; I'm pretty sure keeping my emotions buried is probably a bad thing though. There was one huge drama bomb that happened during the ceremony, but I won't go into it. I'll just say that I was about 2 seconds away from getting into a fight in a tuxedo. I was getting ready to make my move, but one of my brother's friends grabbed me (apparently me and my brother have the same look on our faces when we are getting ready to fight?). Overall it was pretty awesome and I am very happy for brother. I guess we all have to grow up eventually.
I'm heading out to Vegas this Monday and I am looking forward to it. There are so many people that I talk with on a daily basis, but haven't met. It should be an awesome time. While I'm there, I'm also looking at some real estate, but am pretty clueless about the whole process. My mom said she would not have a problem with moving to Vegas since there is a diverse Asian community and my brother lives there. I'm still trying to figure out what my ceiling is (I'm not even sure if I want a mortgage or just pay cash) and will end up looking at a wide range of homes.
Another aspect of my life that is distracting from poker is my girlfriend. She just graduated and is not doing well in the job hunt. Every time she doesn't get the job, I can see the heartbreak on her face and there isn't anything I can do to help. If she doesn't get a job in 3 months, she has to leave the US (she is a Taiwan citizen and here on a student visa). My mom keeps telling me to marry her (WTF), but I'm kind of against the notion of ever getting married. She just got her Masters in Graphic Design and is actually VERY talented... it's just hard to get a job because the Visa process is very expensive and time-consuming for a company
Coaching:
I'm still undecided if I want to start group coaching for profit. The main reason is the time commitment involved... I can't even begin to describe the amount of work I did for the Leggo Group Coaching and that was free; if I charged I'm pretty sure I would do even more. It just basically comes down to the time commitment versus playing (hourly rate, SNE, etc). However, the more I talk poker with players who player lower, the more I realize how much I can help. Hopefully, I will figure this out by the time I get back for Vegas.
Well that is all I have for now... Hopefully I'll give a more detailed update when I return from Vegas. Until then, don't sweat the small things.
