Robert, aka “JoinMyStack”, has seen it all – or at least, a large part of it. At age 23 he’s already well traveled, having held internships with Siemens in Dubai and Jordan. Now he’s finishing off his business administration degree at a university near Berlin, and looking forward to even more world travels.

Robert’s doing well now, but like most of us he started out as a broke student. Thanks to a proficiency in poker, though, he’s gone from working in five-star hotels to staying in them. His work experiences helped him not only to respect hard work, but to learn the value of a dollar – so when a friend told him he could make decent money playing online poker, he decided to explore the option.

He lost his first $50, but the same friend who had introduced him to the game sent him $270 so he could keep going. Robert wanted to play at the same level as that friend – 100NL – so he kept at it. “The crazy thing is, I lost most of the $270 and was down to about $10,” he reflects. But somehow, down to the wire, with just that $10 dollars, he was able to build his bankroll to where it is today. “It must have been a combination of me finally focusing, not tilting, luck and soft games,” he says.

Since most of his friends aren’t into poker the same way he is, Robert has done a lot of independent learning. The biggest impact on his game has definitely been poker videos, and he prefers them to books and forums as a learning tool. Today Robert’s main game is 1000NL. He plays up to 5000NL when the games are good, though, and occasionally plays high stakes tournaments as well.

For Robert, the biggest challenge through his years of playing has been finding the right balance between poker, school, sports, friends, family, and traveling. He wants it all, and has big plans for his life other than “just” becoming a poker millionaire. After another year of school, he plans to travel and play in live tournaments as a break before going back for his master’s. If he does end up working for someone else, he wants it to be a bank or an international company that will need him to travel. As if these goals weren’t enough, he also hopes to start his own business with his poker funds, and also travel to every country in the world that interests him – which is pretty much all of them.
