Sonny is excited to begin coaching at Leggo Poker. He credits his own coach, Mike Kelly, with having the biggest impact on his own game. Sonny highly recommends finding a coach with a solid understanding of how the games play at the level you’re playing at, who actually plays at the stakes you’re playing. “Cash games used to give me a very hard time until I found a good coach who really showed me a lot of the things I was doing wrong,” he says.
Coaching is one aspect of game improvement, but Sonny also recommends practical experience and books as important ingredients in the mix. A coach will be able to help you that much more if you’re already familiar with your own game. That, and mixing in a lot of live play with your online play. “Live games are so weak that it is almost impossible not to win
in the long run at a decent clip if you just play solid. This will help you build your bankroll and confidence while you learn over time to beat the online games,” he advises.
Sonny’s strongest playing points are that he loves the mathematical and analytical part of the game. He also is experienced enough to be objective and self-critical, citing his chess background as a FIDE Master and USCF Life Master as helpful in staying in the right frame of mind.
That being said, Sonny hopes to become more ambitious with his poker playing in the future. Right now, he plays mainly 25 and 50NL, but knows that he needs to overcome his sometimes risk-averse playing style and play higher stakes game. “Bankroll and risk management,” he answers when asked about the areas of his game he’d most like to work on. “I’ve got to work on those to improve my overall financial picture, and to improve as a poker player.”
Sonny loves both teaching and poker, and doesn’t see himself quitting any time soon. He is also an online chess instructor with many years of experience teaching the game. Like all good teachers, Sonny is continually on the hunt for good educational materials, and has tried trial memberships at all the major training sites. He chose make Leggo his online poker home on an ongoing basis, though, because of the high quality instruction.
