When he’s not coaching and playing poker, Simon Dahms is a 24-year-old math student in Berlin. Like most of us, he held a few minor jobs before getting serious about making money playing poker. Unsurprisingly, he finds poker to be more rewarding, both financially and intellectually.
Simon has been playing nl50-nl200 for about two years – but it was only after busting almost his entire bankroll about three times that he really started to work on his game. He started playing when a classmate gave him just about every poker book on the market, and let Simon sweat him as often as he wanted. Simon started off with about $50 and went from there.
“I completely refused to be ambitious in poker for a long time,” Simon stated. He played the game for the fun and the challenge and enjoyed it so much that the money was secondary. He liked constructing elaborate scenarios and playing stubbornly so much that it took a lot of effort to make the switch to thinking about EV.
Now that he’s overcome that first obstacle Simon faces different challenges, including, like many players, dealing with his own ego. But he’s always ready to learn, and discovered a completely different way to look at the game after talking to Zaza for over a year. He cites Zaza as one of the biggest influences on his game to date.
While he works on his present game, Simon isn’t too concerned about the near future, except that it probably won’t be happening in front of a computer. “I try to get the feeling that I can beat everybody who plays me,” he said. “Where that might take me, I don’t care.”
