An exception to the rule among poker players, Tim Matthews graduated with a JD from Queen's Law School in 2008. Although his future plans are unclear, for the time being he's chosen to pursue poker as a career because of the freedom it gives him. In addition to crushing the games, Tim hopes to be able to give back a little and teach the Leggo community.
Tim bolsters Leggo's midstakes lineup with impressive talent and longevity. He has played well over a half-million hands of midstakes NLHE, starting games regularly up to 5-10. Like many of his peers, he credits poker forums for his development. He also credits a list of household talents-- Seabeast, Ahnuld, and Ansky-- with his personal advancement as a player.
With games getting more difficult, cutting down on tables has been a must: "Playing too many tables has been something that I've always struggled with. I think playing a couple tables less than the maximum that you can comfortably handle is almost always a good thing, as it is very easy to make mistakes and not pick up on small details when your full attention is always needed." Coaching
I play 8-10 6-max tables of 600NL - 1000NL across Party and Full Tilt. I have been playing full-time since the summer of 2009 and MSNL since the summer of 2008.
I am a video producer at Leggo Poker and have made a number of well-reviewed videos between 200nl and 1000NL.
I averaged slightly more than 700 hands/hour over this period. I only played a very small number of hands at higher and lower stakes. I consistently start new games at 5/10 on Party and Full Tilt with anyone.
I have coached a number of full-time and part-time MSNL and SSNL players and have also been coached (Ansky, Aaron Jones, Ahnuld, Jared Tendler), which I think helps give me a good sense of what works on both sides of the coaching relationship.
My last 6 screen names on Party have been: IOwnUShrtRun, D__Plainview, S0lzhenitsyn, HowIGotOver, CageyLivePro and DrPangloss. My Full Tilt name is paidinfull23.
Coaching Format
I prefer to start with a review of hand histories that the student has saved and had trouble with, combined with answering questions about poker theory and any other questions about online poker in general the student might have. The first session always goes a bit long to give me a chance to get to know the student a bit.
Future sessions are then a combination of hand history reviews, theory discussions, and video reviews. I am also open to other coaching methods that the student would like to try. I strongly recommend against live sweats, since it can be very tough to learn new concepts when you have to focus on playing at the same time.
I feel like my strengths are that I really make an effort to figure out what areas the student could use guidance in, and combine that with a very strong practical and theoretical knowledge of the current games. I am not a fan of poker coaching that is focused on the coach saying stuff like "fold here, now raise here". I often ask questions about why a student takes a certain line or what he would do if X happened, which I find often leads to interesting discussions.
The focus of my coaching will not be to teach you a bunch of tricks you never thought of in one long monologue, but will focus more on why certain strategies are superior to others.
In my own experiences I have found that 2-5, one hour long sessions is the sweet spot for getting the most value out of a particular coach. However, I am fine doing more or less sessions. I am available to review hand histories between sessions for no additional fee.
At this time I am not offering any package discounts for pre-paying for multiple sessions, although that might change in the future. I really want my students to get more than the cost of the coaching out of every session, so I prefer to do one session at a time and then see how the student is progressing. I am not doing any group coaching at this time.
