In a 5 year period Reid Young has gone from playing 6 Max cash games to crushing 1k NL, and within eight months to playing 2k NL regularly.
Preferring the writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Reid graduated from Wake Forest University as a Philosophy major. He had never had a job before finding poker and when he borrowed $50 from a friend who had some money on a poker site. After a few sit and goes mixed with some Limit Hold'em, Reid quickly built up a bankroll to start playing 100nl.
From that small start with Limit Hold'em Young moved quickly through the ranks in NLHE cash games and didn't play many other games in the meantime. He received coaching from KRANTZ, Mynameizgreg and Aejones, gleaning things for his own game all the while. His coaching allowed him to mix in some heads up along with his regular 6-max game.
"I went from game to game with some PLO and Limit Holdem mixed in to alleviate boredom," said Young, adding, "or to get myself out of funks from playing the same game for a while."
Living life and enjoying every moment is Young's philosophy. However, it is also because of that philosophy and the amount of money he has made from poker that has created his biggest challenge, not putting in enough hands.
"I really have little need to put in too many hands to have a month that more than pays for my eating preferences and travel arrangements, both of which I love doing."
Although his philosophy for life has created a bit of a challenge for him in the grinding aspect, it has also helped him in dismissing peoples' negative views of being a professional poker player.
"My parents and teachers have shown me that life is too short not to do what you love and to stand up for what you believe," says Young, adding, "inside the game I have tons of great friends who I love talking with. If a hand history makes its way into a conversation, we all consider it seriously and respectfully."
As his time continues with poker Young hopes to be crushing 5k NL in a year or so and to be considered an authority in poker theory who people in the community can come to for good advice on how to improve their games.
"For now, poker is just too great of an opportunity to pass up and I love it way too much to be doing anything else. The sky's the limit, even while the games are getting tougher and I've never really doubted my ability to eventually make it up to the top." Coaching
