Default [50nl]HU: 3bet pot line check post flop...

Hero (BTN/SB): $83.37
BB: $57.40

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BTN/SB with A J
Hero raises to $1.50, BB raises to $4.50, Hero calls $3

Flop: ($9.00) Q Q J (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks

Turn: ($9.00) T (2 players)
BB bets $4.50, Hero calls $4.50

River: ($18.00) 6 (2 players)
BB bets $13.50

just a standard question.

against an aggro lag who knows what he's doing. should i always fire on the flop as my default line?

thanks.

How often is villain 3betting pre? Any reads on turn/river bet sizing?

Might be a good time to turn your hand in to a bluff, but I think folding is best.

This is an easy call unless villain was nitty mcnitterson. He may have AA/KK and be attempting to pot control the flop OOP but I still would call as its 50nl and an aggro lag who thinks he can push you off Jx/Tx. You also may have a turned GS/FD with Asxs which he is trying to get you to fold.

This was a good hand to post. You haven't said how you've been playing in 3bet pots, so w/o that history being known the first time this spot came up I'd def call.

If he knows what he's doing, he should be cbetting flop with anything that's big when you get to the river (AK, AA, KK, Qx, TT). The only hand it would make sense for him to 3bet/slow play is JJ/QQ b/c it crushes this flop so hard but is obviously very unlikely. River seems really bluffy, like he's trying to rep AK and hopes you buy it but again w/o history of whether you've been flatting/floating his cbets in 3bet pots and are making it hard on him to be cbetting AK on this flop (he still should be) I can't give him credit for that hand or any hand.

some 3-betting history with villain.

Hero (BTN/SB): $42.51
BB: $54.33

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BTN/SB with Q A
Hero raises to $1.50, BB raises to $5, Hero raises to $16, BB raises to $30, Hero raises to $42.51, BB calls $12.51

Flop: ($85.02) 9 Q 5

Turn: ($85.02) 2

River: ($85.02) 5

Final Pot: $85.02
Hero shows Q A
BB shows K 8
Hero wins $84.52
(Rake: $0.50)

and...

Hero (BTN/SB): $80.62
BB: $53.01

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BTN/SB with 3 3
Hero raises to $1.50, BB raises to $4.50, Hero calls $3

Flop: ($9.00) 8 T 5 (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks

Turn: ($9.00) 8 (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks

River: ($9.00) 7 (2 players)
BB bets $7.50, Hero calls $7.50

Final Pot: $24.00
Hero shows 3 3
BB shows J A
Hero wins $23.50
(Rake: $0.50)

thoughts?

I was more interested in 3betting history where he cbet flops and whether you consistently flatted or folded. That would really influence what he would cbet on QQJ (especially a hand like AK).

Since you asked, w/ a shorter stack size like 80bb and AQ facing a 3bet from an aggro I think I like shoving > flatting > 4betting to induce. Some of these guys will flat those 4b's and have a knack of taking it away on dry flops.

I don't ever flat small pairs 100BB or less unless they are using a really gay 3bet size that I will call just about any hand with. If they're making a standard 3bet size I would rather fold pre or shove if he is 3betting > 20% and take down some dead money. Him showing up w/ AJs as a 3bet hand here says his 3b range is a little wider than most but not enough that I would necessarily go after dead money by shipping 33. If you see him 3betting hands like A9o and K9o + pure trash he is a good candidate to just shove small pairs on.

but as shown with our 3 3 hand. does that make our A J hand more of a call?

I don't think the 33 hand is much of a factor in deciding what to do in the other hand tbh. They're very different boards and since villain knows what he's doing, he would recognize that AJs has some showdown on a board like 8T587 + he will always be called by better, whereas the QQJT6 he can sometimes fold out better with his air hands by betting turn+river. He will also be value betting some of his random trash 3bets that had a J (some of the time) b/c he'd expect you to play AT/KT, 99 hands this way. I just think it's a call here.
