Default My life's Dream: Own my own Hobby Store

As some of you may know I LOVE games/hobbies and my life's dream since I was like 15 has always been to own my own brick and mortar hobby store.

I always thought it was "risky" though and that since I "know" real estate that I should invest my money in real estate and maybe "some day" I'll get the chance to own a hobby store. (specifically I was thinking about paying off one of my buildings, selling it, and buying my store for cash)

Well...I'm an inpatient person and as you might all know, I like to gogogogogo. So I was thinking, what steps could/should I take today to someday realize my dream? (btw, you're all invited to the most baller store opening when I do open it someday)

This is why I posted on here...to get your input/advice/help for my "goals."

1.) Learn how the "distribution" of hobby stuff works. Basically I know you order stuff from a supplier, then you do like monthly "refills" etc. etc. Basically just learn all the lingo and how all that stuff works.

2.) Save up some money for my e-business.

3.) Learn what separates each e-hobby business from each other.

4.) Create a website

5.) Get 24/7 customer service from some 3rd world country set up.

6.) Get a deal struck with like UPS for discounts on mass shipping volume.

7.) Grow to a size that requires it's own little distribution center as opposed to "out of my house" like I plan on starting it.

8.) Eventually "cashflow" enough where I can hire a manager/employee to run the business. (In the beginning I plan on packaging boxes myself etc.)

9.) Grow big enough that I can save money each year.

10.) Use that saved money to buy/rent/lease a building to put my brick and mortar store in

11.) Throw the coolest/free business opening for the leggo community

12.) Be active day to day to get things "efficient" (in a business getting things efficient in the beginning is usually the hardest part of starting one..but once you get the ball rolling it seems to "coast" from then on out)

13.) Get the business set up so it'll be "passive" income and I only have minimal "oversight" requirements

So....what do you guys think? Any good books to read that might help me? Any steps out of order? Any steps I'm missing? I basically posted this cause I know poker players are capable of thinking outside the box and that's exactly what I'm trying to do...basically start a hobby business with minimal downside risk

unfortunately I'm not knowledgeable enough in this area to critique your plan of action. My only advice is to do what you are doing now. Be prepared. know as much as you possibly can. there is a reason that some 70-90% of new businesses go under in less than 5 years. (i think the number i was given pretty much predates a lot of e-business stuff where there are less startup costs and monthly expenses; but you get the point). There are obviously a zillion books on the various subjects surrounding starting/owning your own business, but no recommendations on any good ones, sorry. hope to set foot in your baller hobby store though some day.

Hm... sounds like were in the process, of creating a buisness plan.
You know I'd be more then happy to help where ever you need help

Obv, First step would be a buisness plan. Not sure what your educational back ground is(obv good)... but there are some great online classes, and local college classes for specific people like you trying to learn a new area of business.

I used to hang around a skate shop, I would imagine a business plan, challenges, obstacles, and profitably would be close to the same. I think many owners of these types of stores, would like to see a profit but realize that it will be very difficult. I know one of the many challenges of that my friend faced with his store, was the fact that he would have to purchase all his snowboard gear, or skate gear at the start of the season, just because of the way the distributors were set up. So he had to constantly estimating his orders, and future sales, if he ran out this looked bad, and if he had to much obv his profits were slim. This I think is one of the biggest challenges for a private store owner.

My friend also would become very frustrated w/the hrs that he had to put into keep his store open, also finding really good help was also very tough.

One edge that I think can be easily gained over other stores, is in the online field. A lot of hobby shop type stores often overlook, or do not have the time and energy to run and online shop and brick and mortar. Yet I think a brick and mortar shop cannot be successful w/o the other. Its just to important to have a clean website, that allows your patrons to easily get updates on your products, not to mention allows you to sell to an area much larger then the target area of your brick and mortar store.

So I think it would be very wise to start w/ like a garage and a website, find a local ups hub that can daily pick up and deliver for your store. Once this aspect of your business is up and running and profitable, I think the brick and mortar store can easily follow.

Um.. obv because your winnings at poker and etc.. you would want to avoid having your personal assets at risk. So probably should start and llc. I know there are a ton of books out there on this sorta thing.
I think it would be important to figure out a plan of developing a very good credit line for your llc. These are very important in retail being that you are usually purchasing large orders a couple times of year and then basically waiting for someone to come along. There should be a cpa or accountant in your area that would specialize in these types of retail accounts.

There are websites out there where you can say like" I want this website built w/these features, and people from india can bid on doing the job for you"

There are also companies like the Jay Group, that specialize in offering customer service and shipping of your product, and processing orders. I think you have to be rather large to but it might be something worth looking into. Procurement companies I think they are called.

But would Imagine if your are good w/ books I think the first step is learning about how retail works and handling the constant money flow. Retail stores involve a lot of accounting obv and Understanding the amount of risk involved in retail.

Hope my random thoughts and points make sense. I hope they were hopefull chance are you are more knowledgeable on the subject to begin w/. GL keep me posted.

pm for skype if you want to talk about this stuff, I def enjoy any talk regarding business. and business ideas.

Sounds like you've put some really good thought into your business. Here's a few things I would suggest:

- Find a mentor. No matter how much you read, there's going to be a lot of things that you're going to have to learn by "making every mistake once". Finding someone who's been through it before is the best way to avoid a lot of those potholes. Maybe someone at a local small business that you frequent. I think you'll find most people would be happy to talk with you when they hear what you're planning, even if you don't know them very well.

- Being an entrepreneur is an emotional roller coaster, and unlike poker you can't just walk away for a while and come back. Make sure you've got the mental toughness to keep plugging away when things don't go as planned and you're stuck putting in long hours and not making much in return. Conventional wisdom is that most _successful_ businesses still take three times as long as they initially plan in order to reach profitability.

- Like Maximus suggests, put together a formal business plan. It will help you to organize your thoughts. It will also be important if you decide to get an SBA loan or other funding. Here's a good place to start: http://www.bluerockcapital.com/resources.html

So I'm trying to decide if I want to try and circumvent that ruling (by buying my pieces from someone, then reselling on ebay etc.) because they can't control what i do with my own property. (but I'd still get sued...and have lawyer fees etc.)

Or I can play by there rules...and skip the whole online selling world (and just go str8 B&M).

The other option is: A buddy of mine from back in the day (8+ years ago) recently opened his own store. He has 1 partner currently (who is a cool guy) but they lack funding. (basically they both work there 40+ hours a week, and have a normal job to pay their bills 40+ hours a week) So I thought maybe if I walked in with cash and wanted to buy 51%...they might be interested.

They've already got a player base, and my one buddy worked 10+ years in a hobby store (he's in his late 30's) And his "extended family" owned the hobby store that I used to go to back in the day (which they just closed after over 30 years of success...they retired) All of his experience would be GOOD to team up with.

The other way I've been thinking is going a little commercial with my real estate business. buying a mall (tiny one) and then making it filled with my own businesses. I would put like a pita pit in...hobby store, and then little other franchieses etc. There are NUMEROUS problems with that though. For starters, it'd take LOTS of money (like more then I could come up with) And it'd be REALLy risky...and if it failed would really hurt my net worth.

So...I'm still in the "thinking" stage right now. (sorry if this post isn't that good...I'm 12 tabling cake while typing this out)

Definitely this. I think it'd near impossible to get a b&m to be even close to self sufficient. I think the idea of partnering up with your friends sounds good. It's likely to have less upside, but at least everything's already there and they sound like good people or else you wouldn't be thinking about partnering with them.

I think the mall idea is incredibly high risk for little reward as far as investment goes, but if you really want to do it and research the heck out of it I'd say go for it. I can say that at least in my opinion, if you estimate what the stores in the mall are bringing in and estimate their expenses it doesn't seem that lucrative.

The thing that sucks with b&m's is that even if you do everything "right" it can still have a high rate of failure. That being said if you really want to do it I think it's definitely something you should at least do once.
