This is a program that you can use instead of camtasia. The biggest benefit for this program is that it works for our needs to make videos for review and its Free. It is called camstudio, and it can be found at

I think it works great and I made my first member contribution video with it and want to share with everyone this software.

I hope this will encourage more members to post more videos - especially if the hurdle was buying camtasia - obviously for micro and smaller stake players you just do not want to pay a chunk of your bankroll for software however the critiques and feedback can be very helpful. So here it is Camstudio to solve this problem.

I use the following setting:
I use full screen capture, record audio from microphone, and Microsoft Codec V2 70% quality. This setting on a 24inch monitor (1920x1200) is 400mb for 60mins. If anyone, especially the video producers know how to get the best quality for the videos and smallest file size please share. My main concern is HEM stats getting to fuzzy to ready. I have not figured this out as far as what is optimal. I guess you can play with settings and other programs that do compression.

I had the same reservation before using it so I checked it out at norton and they said its safe. So I think if you download from their site its safe but if you go somewhere else who knows. I have not had any problems with this one and my anti-virus says it clean. You know its up to you.

BTW what software do you use that's 30 dollars that gets this job done? I didn't want to pay $300 for camtasia so I used camstudio.

One question. Why your video shows only black screen and voice in my video player? Something wrong with Microsoft video code?

Camstudio is a good freeware but it can't replace what paid screen recorder can offer, especially for online pokers. Many special visual effects can help people to get better understand to your video. So if you have budget, better to try those paid screen recorder. There're many other alternative to choose besides Camtasia. I use DemoCreator to make tutorial video for my YouTube channel. It's cheaper yet impressive as well.

I am not sure - but if you update the microsoft media player it might make it work. Let me know if that does the trick.

I agree with the paid stuff - its better but it will cost you some money and for purposes this does the job for me.

Well, I used another player and now it's OK. Surely it's the issue of video codes.

Hope to watch your second screencast but about poker tips or whatever related. Perhaps I can make one sample with my screen recorder as a comparison?

I think I'd like to try though I'm quite a layman in poker.
