Helping families in need at christmas

The last few years there has been a great cause i've happened upon around christmas, like when durr and viffer took donations on 2p2 then bought out half of a wal mart for families in need. This year i havent had the same blind luck in coming across something like this, and dont really know where to look. I know very little about charities, and would prefer not to just donate to one of the bigger ones. Can anyone help?
