Re: Coaching or "The Book" ?
I think everyone has made some valid points. I think that coaching can be great because you're going to be able to find some HUGE leaks quickly. That said, a book, my book in particular, is going to let you come back to it over and over again and be much more thorough and lasting than the tantamount costing lessons could ever be. Interesting or relevant spots in sweat lessons are fewer and farther between than the focus my book offers.
I've written the book in such a way that it anticipates every possible question in many spots. So for example, you're considering floating or raising a player's cbet and which will have the higher expected value. There are tons of questions you should be able to at least answer with an educated guess based on some extrapolation of your opponent's play, stack size, number of tables he's playing at, metagame (long and short-term), other players in the pot, etc etc etc. I talk about all that. By the time you discuss a topic like that in a sweat lesson, another spot that takes just as long to talk about has already come up and then another comes up during that... it happens to me when I coach sometimes, so I try to write them down and review in the last 5-15 minutes of a session.
Basically what I'm gettng at is that 10 lessons with a comparable coach to myself, in my biased opinion, a rare thing (I'm sure my students can speak for me here though), isn't going to be close to the value of a book of a ton of what I know about poker. It's purposefully written to guide you through all of it based on questions I've gotten about almost every spot discussed in the book from what is now a bit more or less than one hundred different students. My student's results are there, my teaching results are there, the video comments and rankings are there, and this book is the most compact and well-thought-out way I've seen to take people from MSNL to HSNL out there. I've been working hard over the last year to make sure that it delivers.
I guess that's about all I can say as far as comparing coaching to my book. I think for some people $2500 is too much, and I've turned some people away because of it. Someone who plays 100nl with a $4000 roll is going to do much better watching videos. A 200nl player who has a $10000 roll is fairly close and probably would greatly benefit from getting the book, A staticly winning (winning for a small amount) 400nl player with a higher roll who only needs to make just over 6 buy-ins life time to break even from buying this book would be remiss to not buy it. I suppose all this sounds like opinion, but I'll just finish rambling by saying that I have plenty of results to back the claim up, so hopefully those will help you make the correct decision. If it doesn't, there are a list of people who will gladly answer your questions (students, other coaches), including myself.
