Default I have played poker for a number of years

Hi all,
I have played poker for a number of years and pretty much know the general rules. The question I have though is about betting, which I havnt done much of. Ok, lets say we are playing Hold'em and I have a sweet hand. A player before me bets his last chip and cant go any harder but I want to. What happens? I am thinking I can only bet up to see his bet and everyone else can only do the same. Is this right? Pretty simple question I know but like I said I am only new to the betting side of it and any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.

if you are in the pot with one other person you can only play for the amount of money that the shorter stack has. so if you have $1000 on the table but he has $450 then you can only play for $450.

if there are more players in the pot then it works like this.
Player A has $1000
Player B has $500
Player C has $1000

In this scenario if player B puts in all of his money then everyone will play a main pot of $1500. ($500 from each player). then players A and C will continue the hand with a side pot. (if players A and C then got all in there would be a side pot of $1000. $500 from both players A and C)

EDIT: also in the 2nd example Player B has zero right to the side pot since none of his money is in it.

You can still put all your chips in and a side pot is created. Basically what stockton said. Otherwise if someone has 2 chips and everyone else has 1500 it would be kind of pointless.

Stocktons post hits it on the head, but there is one other scenario that should be mentioned.

This is rarely seen but does come up, and when it does its very important that you understand it. Ive seen this more live then online.

player 1 opens to 50 500 stack size
player 2 calls 50 500 stack size
player 3 goes all in for 65

Player 1 & 2 can only call the 15 to match the all in of player 3. This is because player 3 did not increase the size of the original bet my more than 50% ( this may be different at different casinos)

This rule is applicable on every street, meaning flop, turn and river. Now this is extremely important to know about, because there will be post flop situations where the original raiser maybe want to re-raise a strong hand, or bluff to isolate the short stack, and is unable to.

I have seen this rule used a few times and many players do not know about it, nor understand when or why to use it. But its worth mentioning.
