Default Bet folding vs Check calling

As of late ive found that i bet fold and check call at "the wrong times".
The question i am asking is kind of broad, but what kind of situations are you leading more toward bet folding rather than check calling, and why?
Does anyone have a rule of thumb for bet folding/check calling?
Its obviously opponent specific. Bet/fold vs the tight ones. Check/call vs the loose ones, but against a villain that we have no stats on, what situtations are more of a bet/fold rather than a check call.
Again,i know this is broad, and i dont even know what im trying to get out of this post, but its worth a shot.

Oh, and this lends itself toward flop/turn play. My river bet fold and check call range seems to be spot on.

In general I like to bet fold against more aggressive opponents. Check/calling vs aggressive players feels like I'm wasting that call because I'm going to get barrelled a lot. It's the opposite vs a more passive player but the hand requirement changes a bit. Against a more passive player I'm more inclined to check/call with medium strength showdown hands because if I get barrelled again I can be more sure that I'm likely beat and if he checks behind theres a good chance I'm ahead and the pot is smaller. If I lead against a passive player and get called, the turn creates some unknown areas where if I check I'm not entirely sure if he'll read me as weak and bet light and bluff and if I lead again my hand is turning into a multiple barrel bluff and for me that just leads to big problems against passive players on the river.

In general...I have to agree with Unknown Soldier that check/calling is usually probably not your best option.

There are definately spots though where check/calling is the right play however.

Sometimes I'll check call really really aggro players to slowplay a strong/non nutish hand heads up to help balance and because I'm sure his double barrell range is wide and his requency his high where I can safely and confidently check/raise a majority of turns profitably. It increases variance but also incrases your expected value vs these players in aggro HU matches. Also makes it harder for them to gauge your hand.

I'll also check/call some passive players on a draw heavy board with plans to rep any likely draw that gets there or just let the board get more dangerous to move them off a narrow and defined hand.

Example:

6max game. I open CO and get 3bet by a nit UTG and call. If stacks are deep enough and the board is right, you can check/call with some weaker hand/draws and use the board against him on a flop like 57Tss where if he has AA** a lot then he'll probably won't be betting a lot of turns with the naked Aces and if he freezes up you can bluff rivers. You really need to pick the right player to do this against though. So don't go and try this as soon as you are 3bet...you really need to apply it to the correct situation. Make sure stack sizes are right, make sure the player is tight/passive/predictable/ABC style and make sure the board texture is right and it helps to have some likely outs as well.

I like to bet/fold hands with complete air in the general cbet spots where the best shot of winning the pot is right there on the flop. Also bet fold for value when you KNOW for sure that when/if you are raised that you're beat but there are plenty of hands that can call for whatever reason. I think a lot of players lose value in PLO on turn/rivers when they can bet and use the bet to help read the opponents hand.

Also, bet/folding suited flops when you have the Ace or King of the suit.

There is plenty of reasons to take either line. You just need to apply it to the situation and take the line that yields you the most value.
