I have done this a lot in the past. At the start of the month I just made a commitment to myself to play at least 3-4 hours every day unless Im actually sick or otherwise not likely to be thinking clearly. What has helped motivate me is setting myself a goal of having $x invested/in the bank in a years time, and the only way Im going to get there is by putting in consistent hours every week.

Just set yourself goals and do everything to get there.
My goal this month is atleast 2k hands a day, so about 60k this month.

No matter how I run I play atleast 2k hands that day, and if I run bad I quit immediately after those 2k hands, but if I run good I might throw in another 2k.

If I feel like I'm really tilting though that's the only excuse I can have for quitting a session early. And this month this is really the case, 14BI's below EV kinda gets to you, and also this has caused me to play superbad in non-showdown pots which tilts me even more because that's something I actually control opposed to running bad.

I realize this is old and bumped, but I had put in 12k and 13k months the last two months but for the opposite reasons (running horrible). I made a prop bet for 3 hours a day every day (5 grace days) or pay a penalty to the other person. So far I have 18k hands in and I'm on pace to have my best month ever.

Sorry for bumping a super old thread, but Sh58, how did you get over you're problem? I'm beginning to get the same problem, although it's more due to breaking even over a long period than running hot.

I have this problem as well, I'd really like to know how you overcome this. It just doesn't seem to make sense to not play when running well, but since a few people in this thread are experiencing the exact same thing there must be a pyschological reason behind it (& therefore a way around it!).

I recommend a number of things to eliminate this:
First- Don't actively keep a tally if you are up or down, don't check your balance, and evaluate you play objectively.
Second- Play analytically, if you are happy when you are up, it is more likely you will be unhappy when you are down, focus on being "apathetic" to the monetary component as best you can.
Third- Follow etown's advice, when you gain a buy-in or two, re-eval your tables. A lot of times the dynamic will have changed, so I will leave and switch to a new table, in some ways this can psychologically feel like "booking" the win on the table.
Fourth- Do NOT set a rigid schedule until you are more emotionally detached, because if you DO start losing, and you stick it out because you have to, then you are only going to lose more, and poker will become a crappy job.

I took the $won and BB/100 off my holdemmanager and I only check how I'm doing at the end of the week. Since I've started doing this I'm getting in a lot less sessions for some reason but I no longer quit sessions based on how much I''m up or down, just how I'm feeling or how many hands I've got in.
