Default Running Badly and it's Effects on Playing

One of my weaknesses is my lack of ability to maintain focus while running really badly. The other day I lost 6 buyins in PLO in less than 550 hands. I knew I was running badly, and had to quit from frustration. I looked at Poker EV, and saw that my equity in the session was actually positive.

Do you guys have trouble staying in the zone when it starts to get ugly out there? If not, do you do anything that prevents frustration? I'm not talking about tilting, just my mind being clouded and not being able ot play my A game.

My downswings lead to bad play and it definitely gets worse and worse as I keep playing. Yet, I continue to continue anyway. Walking away is a very tough skill to learn, but also very valuable.

I plan on doing a blog on this pretty soon. I struggled for a while recently and was forced to admit to myself that I had developed a negative attitude and really wasn't playing very well. I took a holiday and since I got back I have been crushing skulls again... Always a bit of a "coincidence" how time off magically causes the "running bad" to cease! I have some insane before/after graphs too.

I think that this is probably one of the most overlooked aspects of being a long term professional player. Also something that I have spent a TON of time thinking about and talking to people about. Since I struggled with my game and a serious downswing for a a few months. If there is any interest I have a few thoughts on what can lead to a downswing and some ideas how to break out of it, I would def consider doing somewhat of a long post about it.

But also I really think people tend to overestimate their edge in alot of situations, and how small the difference between winning/breakeven and loosing play is.

I think most people don't realize that during a downswing they often tend to play as if they are on tilt. It just seems like if they raise, cbet and get called they loose all ability to check fold the turn which they know is correct. Instead their bluffing frequencies go way up and they try to check raise turn as bluffs and other "fancy plays" (which is often not a bad play in certain spots but they will take this line indiscriminately.)

Also ppl tend not to be able to release hand post flop when they know they are beat instead check calling multiple streets. This can often be very difficult to remedy because all it takes is two spews for stacks every 1k hands to turn a big winner into a breakeven or small loosing player.
