that being said I think the bet is fairly standard and fine as a protection/value bet, but if you are going to be checking back this flop some this seems like an ideal hand to do it with,

Yeah its a spot where I tend to check it back a fair amount there as well to do a delayed cbet or pick off some bluffs...
At the time though, I just felt like betting would be alright since I dont know him as a strong reg who's bluffing frequencies will be better and he would likely play pretty straightforward with most of his hands. so if he does call the flop, I can check back the turn and expect him to try to just check it down a lot with his own 5x and 7x hands on the river
You've already mentioned the thin value/protection benefits of the bet but there's also the added profitability of when he does try to pull some bluffs as it is a pretty tough board for the majority of my raising range to hit.
As far as this hand being ideal to check it back with, you are correct its a good one to do so with but I tend to try to play my hands based more off gameflow/specific opponents than its absolute strength. In some spots where a "standard" value bet should be done, it may play better as a check and sometimes with a hand you can pot control with, you can go for value/protection. You should try it out and see how it goes.
