DISCLAIMER: For the psychologists out there, the content presented here is aimed at poker players, not academics, and the material is an excellent model for poker players to think of the operations of the brain. The ideas presented are good for the purposes of this video and there is a LOT that can be learned as a poker player.
Thanks Student Caine! |

Thanks all - I am glad that everyone has gotten something out of this so far. ;)
One thing I forgot to do as part of the video was list my sources, so I would like to do that now:
I used the following book for the physical brain model:
MacLean, P.D. "The Triune Brain in Evolution: Role in Palocerebral Functions"
It is a huge book and pricey (I was able to borrow a copy) and probably goes into way more detail than we as card players would need, but if you are nerdy you might find it interesting.
For an overview of how we think and some techniques I refered to:
Beck, Judith "Cognitive Therapy: Basics and Beyond"
Leahy, Robert "Cognitive Therapy Techniques"
McKay, Davis, & Fanning "Thoughts and Feelings: Taking Control of Your Moods and Your Life"
I also referenced a paper that is available online: "How to Achieve Emotional Control" by Mark Lindsay. I should note that the Cognitive Model used on slides 9 & 10 came from this paper. |

Thanks Ultras, that means a lot coming from you.
Yeah the 10k debacle is true. :( I was actually playing 400NL, having worked my way up from 50NL. Basically it started with a bit of bad variance coupled with sporadic shot taking and became poor bankroll management coupled with a nuclear meltdown.
I may have the PT2 db and a graph of it on my old desktop. I will pull it out of the garage when I get home and see if I can find it; it is morbidly interesting. ;) |

I was able to review most of this video. I thought it was pretty cool, and I think a full series or followup of some kind with basically a breakdown of what we can really do within our control to get better at these things emotionally, become more callous, etc. and maybe even how experience relates to this would be very useful.
You can really see the effort that went into a video like this, although if I had one critique it would be that the power point slides have about 25% less words on them in general. |

excellent video. I can relate i had a pretty epic meltdown around a year ago. I'm still recovering from it. |

very nic vid!
Also for a player like me, that has never had a meltdown tilt. But is suffering from minor forms of tilt from time to time. |

Wow very nice vid,
This has opened my eyes today. I knew there was something wrong these days, just couldnt figure it out till about now. It all seems to click now.
So here is my story:
I wanted more money to become more financially independend. On itself a good goal. Combining poker with work is the way to do it.
However the problems began the beginning of this month i experienced some tilt these days after getting some beats on the 400nl. Resulting in being mad on myself for not playing good enough.
The problem was i focussed too much on winning the monies, instead of playing well. Furthermore i just realized that i missed out on the very reason i started playing poker all along: MORE FREEDOM!!!
With playing more to win more to get more financial freedom i just trapped myself :O.It is an simply yet easy overlooked truth.
So i gonna change things, starting by playing less poker, also working less and enjoying my life as it is right now!!!
Thanks again for this great vid mate, could have taken me a month or longer to figure out what i did wrong and now you just fixed it right away!!! Thats just great!!!
greets

Thanks for the feedback all and I am glad that the information was useful to so many.
You can really see the effort that went into a video like this, although if I had one critique it would be that the power point slides have about 25% less words on them in general.
I will make the slides slightly less verbose - I have this tendency when creating powerpoint slides to think people read more than they listen.
So i gonna change things, starting by playing less poker, also working less and enjoying my life as it is right now!!!
It is really amazing how heightening our awareness, even in a general sense (e.g., stopping and pondering "why am I thinking/feeling this way?") has the potential to expose some really big issues, that are easily changed and make us much happier/more productive.
oh and also it was good, i will be retraining my brain a ton this month
Im waiting part 2 :)
I have been given the go ahead to proceed with Part 2 of the series and I will get started on the power point slides and recording ASAP. Many thanks to the Leggo Staff and members for this opportunity.
Part 2 will cover a few different topics, the most important of which will be ways to monitor and modify how we think (i.e., retraining our brain ;)) |
