Nom, Nom, Nom :)
For the lazy folks, here's the UTL mentioned in the video:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/sleep/sheep
Pretty good so far. The disclaimer about Powerpoint at the beginning is not neccessary because the points you mention as missing aren't usually found in good, professional presentations (except some graphics).
Edit: done. Yeah I'll probably get on a good exercise plan for the next year. Thankfully I already eat somewhat good.
Only problem is the sleep shedule because I need to stay up late to play the USfish ;)
But from what I understood it doesn't matter too much when you sleep but only how long, is that correct? |
 |
| sh58 |
yeah it was an interesting vid. definitely a worthwhile addition to the site
to clowntable...i think it is alot better for you to sleep when it is dark for a couple of reasons (if i remember my A level psychology correctly)
our sleep cycles are affected by the light, light makes us want to wake up
also sunlight is really good for your psyche, makes you alot happier becuse sunlight triggers happy hormones, leading to less depression etc
very rusty, but lots of stuff about circadian rythms being affected by various things |

Great video. I think there's often a huge overdose of information on these topics and it's kind of hard to understand and interpret. You presented it clearly and I think it will help a lot of people.
For the past few years, I've pretty much been as unhealthy as a person can be. Eating terribly, having horrible sleep patterns, and being completely sedentary. Over the past few months, I've improved all of these things significantly and I feel leagues better. I am actually able to focus and remember things to a degree I didn't even know existed a few months ago. Unfortunately I'm far from healthy at this point, but I am feeling better every single day. Your video WILL help me.
Thanks |

Thanks for the feedback guys. I kind of took a risk with this video but I thought I have a lot of good information inside, so why not present it.
As far as the sleeping at night portion, that is correct. Actually, a human body, if I recall correctly, wants to naturally be sleeping around 3 AM and 3 PM (more nap-lengthed at 3 PM, and longer sleep at 3 AM). The points that sh58 present are all valid and should be considered.
Honestly, I don't think that the games are THAT different during the night vs day where you have to justify being awake at crazily unnatural hours. I would be shocked if you could not have your money on 2-3 sites, play 4-8 tables of any level in SSNL or MSNL, and have that many very good tables to play at. The worst case scenario is that you will have to hop to more +EV tables more often, which most people should be doing anyway.
Some of the softest tables I have ever seen in my life have occurred at 11 AM EST on US sites (post UIGEA). |

Good video Greg. I think most of this stuff is things most people know(not the technical scientific things, but rather that eating healthy, getting a lot of sleep, etc will =more money, happier life etc). however it is always good to hear it. One of my main goals in 2008 is to get on a regular workout schedule. |
 |
| SEABEAST |
yeah people can't really be reminded of this stuff enough.
it's definitely so intertwined as well. like when i get up before midday i will basically always eat well and make it to the gym, whereas when i wake up at 2-3pm i end up eating bad late night take away at midnight and often missing gym opening times or feeling too seedy to want to go. |

I think my problem is I take too many "cheat days" haha. My last 12 months has been one long cheat day |

I enjoyed the video, lots of useful info. I started jogging 2-3 times/week earlier this year and found that it really helped my sleep and made me feel better in general.
The format is good and something I would be interested in seeing again in the future. You could also combine it with some footage of playing. You could talk about a certain topic (eg 3betting, floating etc), show the theoretical concepts in powerpoint and then show a few clips of it in practice.
A little off topic, but to add to what you were saying in the video, I find that playing in a clean and tidy environment helps me focus and play better. This might not be true for everyone but I find that untidyness in my peripheral vision puts me off a bit. |

nice video, but rumor has it that greg is a cheat day machine |

Very nice video. I too wondered about having enough sleep but it being shifted to irregular hours.
You've already affected one change. While going to the supermarket today I was trying to think what categories the foods were that I was picking or elaborating to pick. :D
My main sport is badminton (I'm pretty good). I do it twice a week. If I do it more it will take away too much energy from my week. But I've joined a gym two weeks ago (mostly for weights). I really like this combination of athleticism and power and feel my body reacting to it. I'm hoping to lose some weight and gain some muscle this way. |

Nice video Greg, I read a lot about fitness and sleep in the last year and it is so true. But due to playing poker and investing my time into improving my game I disregarded fitness, eating and sleeping well :( Thanks for the video which gives me a new impulse to start over again! By the way, what do you think of: Hypertrophy Specific Training? |
 |
| MYNAMEIZGREG |
Honestly HSP is ok, but I feel like it's too far to one end of the spectrum. I bodybuilded for years, and I would say that, on a scale of 1-10, where 1 is a routine solely focusing on hypertrophy, and 10 focusing on strength training, somewhere in the realm of 2-3 is best. There is just a level of stress/GH release that doing squats, deadlifts, and barbell bench reach that all other compound or isolation exercises can't achieve (and that occurs in the 2-4 rep/max intensity range as opposed to 6-8). |

Hey,watched the video and was not why I joined the site but interesting nontheless.
Greg, maybe you could give examples of food that is considered healthy (what kind of meat, sides, salad and so on). Even though this is not a cooking site, maybe you could post some recipes for young poker players (i.e. simple things that will be ready to eat fast, since probably most of us are not experienced cooks or want to lower our EV by spending 3 hours/day in the kitchen :-) ). |
 |

Yeah def, Greg if you know some good healthly simple recipes fill us in! |

GOGOGO!!!! |

| MYNAMEIZGREG |
Ya honestly I'm more of a make plain grilled chicken type guy if I want to eat healthy as opposed to cooking a healthy recipe, so that would be great if Wu36 wanted to post some :). |
 |
| bpc009 |
there are loads of good recipes here: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/index.html |
 |
| Wu36 |
This is a pretty broad topic, and there are tons of recipes online as stated above. But I think I'll make a rather lengthy "theory" type post in the next few days so people can learn the basic techniques required to create healthy meals or adapt some existing recipes. Greg covered a lot of the essential nutrition stuff so I'll likely focus on the cooking aspect instead of nutrition/food choices (unless you want to see that stuff).
So, let me know what you'd like to see. I've got a culinary school degree and a bunch of experience w/ this stuff mainly from the strength training side of things. It'd help to know what the average poster is trying to acheive. |
 |
| BStinson |
I just want to get away from ordering Pizza and eating microwave meals all the day and want to eat more healthy (i.e. I don't want continue eating stuff that has negative influence on body and mind).
Looking forward to you post. And I know there are many recipes online, but imo too many for someone who just wants to get started. |

Hey,
Just signed up and this is my fav vid so far! :-D
I wouldn't mind more vids of this kind in the future!
Nom nom nom!!
Oh yeah a little tip, buy this sucker (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-HR1861-Pro-Aluminium-Juicer/dp/B0007XHGHA) and make your own juice every morning. This sucker is super fast and easy to use/clean. It comes with a dvd filled with smoothie/juice recipes. Great way to get alot of vitamins and all that good for your body stuff into you.
I actually made broccoli juice yesterday, just had to try it and tbh, it didn't taste that bad. Kinda looked like glowing green poison tho.
AnyhoOoOo...

just watched the video. just thought i'd add that imo t-nation.com has the best content of any site out there. it's a bit hardcore but the articles and wealth of knowledge is second to none. for lifting i'd recommend anything by chad waterbury and figure out which program would be best for you. |
 |
| MYNAMEIZGREG |
T-nation is pretty good from a content standpoint. I think that the people that are most ahead of their time are AvantLabs (although I am biased because I wrote a couple articles for them back in the day). If you really like the science/physiology behind working out/nutrition, their address is www.avantlabs.com, and the magazine is www.mindandmuscle.net.
Actually, I found my articles: http://www.mindandmuscle.net/node/397. If you are into that stuff, read the pregame show first. I was I think 16 at the time of these (These were the summer/fall going into my junior year of HS). |

Greg/Anyone,
Is there a time of day where it's best to do cardio? First thing in the morning? A couple hours before bed? It doesn't matter?
Thanks. |

To answer my own question, I just found this on a HIIT site:
"Your HIIT program will likely be most effective if performed first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, but if you can't do it in the a.m., do it at noon, night, whenever!" |
 |
| MYNAMEIZGREG |
Ehh, I don't like that idea, and I'll reply why: |
 |
| MYNAMEIZGREG |
When you are trying to lose weight, you essentially fall into two different categories:
-Weight trainer
-Non weight trainer.
If you do any type of physical activity on an empty stomach (ESPECIALLY while only waking up), it will amplify everything. That means both fat loss and muscle loss. I suppose this is ok if you never do resistance training (weightlifting), but if you do, then your goal should almost always be fat loss, with muscle preservation.
The thing is, if you do any sort of physical activity (for weight loss purposes), you benefit primarily from the calories burned, and also from the metabolic effects afterwards (this is why HIIT is my preferred weight loss training - it shocks your system and therefore your metabolism remains in high gear for a longer time afterwards). These two things will occur independent of how much food is in your system/bloodstream.
Basically, if you weight train AT ALL (which I would recommend even if you're a runner), when you lose weight, it is extremely difficult/impossible to preserve all of your muscle. Therefore, I am heavily against doing any type of training on an empty stomach, because it will catabolize too much muscle (despite the fact that it will increase fat loss rates). Simply put, this is a big no no if you want muscle preservation, and it's only "ok" if you don't care about that at all.
I feel like I have a lot of knowledge about nutrition, working out, and general health. Would you guys be interested in creating a forum for it? |

Hi,
just watched the video, and i enjoyed it. i would be into a forum for this kind of thing, that included some other various well being type stuff as well.
for example some other things that we can do outside of sitting down to play might include:
having a clean, clear and tidy desk, and room or study to play in. i really think this is very important. |

also coffee. im sure most if not all dietricians would say its pretty bad, but as poker players im sure we get through enough of the stuff (or gallons of tea for us brits).
i try to balance each cup of coffe with a glass of water.
would be interested to hear greg's, or anyone elses thoughts. |
 |

isnt coffee only bad because of the stuff you put in it? Like sugar, milk etc.. I thought straight black coffee wasn't bad at all? |

The reasoning that some people don't like coffee drank, say, every day at hte same time is due to the dependency nature of caffeine. Your body actually expects this caffeine to be present once you show it that every day, and therefore its not so much that the coffee/caffeine takes you from functional to feeling great, but rather eventually from non-functional/feeling crappy to functional.
It's a fine idea to balance it with water to the diuretic nature of caffeine, which means it makes you release water (ie pee) more. |

I'm glad you liked the video :).
There are no negative effects to drinking diet soda, unless your body has a state where you cannot digest the amino acid phenylalanine (that's why there is that warning on the box). Phenylalanine is an amino acid (protein) used in the formula to create artificial sugar, but you will have known for a long time is you had this issue, and drinking diet sodas would be the least of your worries.
Along those lines, some studies have proven an amount of artificial sugar to be lethal in lab rats. These studies are true. However, under the LD50 (A dosage that will kill 50% of whatever is being given the dose), or under an amount that kills lab rats, the artificial sugar is completely harmless. In fact (and you look this up), you would need to literally drink over 1,000-10,000 diet sodas every given day for a while before you would be in trouble. The half life (the time it takes for half of something to exit your system/become irrelevant) of the artificial sugar is very low so there is no long term buildup to be worried about either. |
